Free CORI training on Zoom hosted by Crispin from Access to Justice! Details to come!

MassCOSH is pleased to welcome Access to Justice Fellow and Attorney Crispin Birnbaum on Tuesday May 26, 2026 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm to provide a Zoom training for staff on Massachusetts Criminal Records, Sealing and Expungement. The training will offer an overview of the criminal records system in Massachusetts, including who has what level of access to it for background checks, and what rights clients have under the CORI laws. I will briefly touch on the federal records system as well. The second half of the training will provide an overview of sealing and expungement of Massachusetts criminal records, with practical information for referring clients to free legal services.

The goal of the training is to enable staff with direct care duties to become more knowledgeable and confident speaking with clients about the consequences of living with criminal records in the community. Staff will be able to better identify when and where to refer clients to take that self-empowerment step to address their criminal records via free legal services. Staff will gain information to answer clients’ frequently asked criminal records questions.

Please plan to attend on time so Attorney Birnbaum can answer all your criminal records questions during the training. She worked for the Commonwealth for 34 years, including as General Counsel at the Massachusetts Probation Service and the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services. After she retired from the Commonwealth in 2018, she has worked as an Access to Justice Fellow focusing on assisting clients with criminal records in four free legal clinics and offering many trainings such as this one across the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court honored Attorney Birnbaum with an Adams Pro Bono Publico Award for her criminal records work.

As temperatures continue to rise across Massachusetts, MassCOSH is urging employers, policymakers, and communities to take heat safety seriously and protect workers from preventable illness, injury, and death.

🧊 Take breaks in shaded or cool areas
👕 Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
👀 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
📚 Get trained in heat illness prevention

Heat kills — prevention saves lives. Workers deserve stronger protections, safer workplaces, and enforceable heat standards.

Heat stress and heat exhaustion do not only affect the body — they can seriously impact the brain and mental health. Extreme heat can reduce concentration, slow reaction time, increase irritability, confusion, anxiety, and emotional distress, while severe heat stroke can lead to disorientation, hallucinations, seizures, memory problems, unconsciousness, and even permanent neurological damage. Workers exposed to prolonged heat may struggle to make safe decisions, increasing the risk of workplace injuries and fatalities. Staying hydrated, taking breaks, cooling down, and recognizing early warning signs can save lives.

As temperatures continue to rise across Massachusetts, workers are facing increasing risks of heat stress, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even death on the job. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Occupational Health Surveillance Program (OHSP), Massachusetts averages approximately 67 fatal occupational injuries each year. Heat exposure continues to place outdoor workers, construction workers, warehouse employees, delivery workers, agricultural laborers, and indoor workers in high-heat environments at serious risk. (Massachusetts Government)

National data from OSHA estimates more than 33,890 serious work-related heat injuries and illnesses occurred between 2011–2020, with nearly 1,000 workers nationwide dying from environmental heat exposure. Experts also warn that heat-related injuries are significantly underreported. (OSHA)

MassCOSH continues to advocate for strong enforceable heat standards that protect workers through access to water, rest, shade, acclimatization, training, and emergency response plans. Dehydration can cause dizziness, headaches, confusion, fatigue, kidney damage, and increase the risk of workplace injuries and fatalities. No worker should have to risk their life simply to earn a paycheck.
