We had an incredible time celebrating JPo’s birthday Friday night! Thanks to The Powhida Infirmary for rocking the joint, the staff at the Lizard Lounge Cambridge for treating us so well, Selene & Eric for putting the night together, and all of you for showing up & singing & dancing! And thanks to the one and only John Powhida for continuing to create & perform beautiful music.

It’s a birthday party and you’re all invited! Our longtime pal, Boston rock legend John Powhida, is celebrating a big birthday and we’re gonna help him make it a night to remember. Join us on Friday, May 15 at the Lizard Lounge Cambridge!

The Powhida Infirmary will hit the stage at 8pm and then we’ll play a long set starting around 9:15pm to bring the evening home. Perhaps Mr. Po will even join us for a song or two!

We are devastated. Our beloved friend, Alex “Gumball” Garrido—a founding member of Sidewalk Driver—has died. He fought cancer valiantly and left this world on June 10, 2025 with loved ones at his side. Tad and Gumball grew up together in Miami, playing in bands together there and bringing their rock to Boston, where they played in the legendary Board and would go on to form Sidewalk Driver in the fall of 2004. If you enjoy our first full-length album, For All the Boys and Girls, you know Gumball’s work. He played lead guitar and worked his arranging magic all over that album. He was a prolific songwriter, a talented multi-instrumentalist, a kind and caring bandmate, and his impact on Sidewalk Driver is still felt today. When we work on a new song, someone inevitably says, “We should add a Gumball part here,” referring to one of those tasty, dynamic layers that were his signature. Gumball left the band in 2008 when his wife’s job took them away from Boston. We had a magical onstage reunion when he joined us on Small Talk at the For All the Boys and Girls release show. We’ll share a video in the comments; you can feel the joy through the screen. We’re sending all of our love to Gumball’s wife, Rita, their son, Adrian, and to all of GB’s family and friends. To know Gumball was to love him and to lose him is heartbreaking. Tell your loved ones you love them.
