Life in Hawaii’s forests is not all birdsong amid paradise.
There is crime among avians, too.
Scientists recently found that some native birds have developed a habit of burglarizing their neighbors’ nests, according to a new study.
“Now we can say who’s doing it, who they’re stealing from, and what happens to the nests afterward,” lead author Erin Wilson Rankin, an entomologist at the University of California, Riverside, said in a statement.
Scientists have long suspected that certain birds steal nest-building material from each other, a behavior known as kleptoparasitism. But researchers say this is the first study to document and measure the phenomenon systematically among Hawaiian forest birds.

Purple has long been associated with imperial splendor, royal robes and church vestments, symbolizing wealth, power and status across centuries.
But in York, the northern English city once known to the Romans as Eboracum, researchers have found that two babies were buried nearly 1,700 years ago in gold-threaded Tyrian purple fabric, a luxury normally linked to emperors and the elite.
The findings add to evidence that Roman families grieved infants in private, even when custom and law limited public mourning.

Cockatoos may have more in common with humans than just the ability to mimic speech.
A new study has found that the parrots pick up food trends from one another, allowing new eating habits to spread quickly through their social circles.
Researchers studying wild sulfur-crested cockatoos in Sydney found that the birds rely heavily on peer influence when deciding whether unfamiliar food is worth trying, a behavior that may help them adapt to rapidly changing urban environments.
Animals living in cities constantly encounter unfamiliar foods, some of which may be risky. As a result, cockatoos appear to watch what others are eating before making their own decisions.

Here's what's happening in global news this week 👇
🇿🇲 Zambia just stalled a $2 billion US health deal — and cancelled a human rights conference after China pressured it to exclude Taiwan. One small country, two superpowers, and a very difficult balancing act.
🇷🇺 Putin celebrated Victory Day claiming total victory is coming — then told reporters hours later the war was "coming to an end." Meanwhile: 123,000 casualties for 66 square kilometres since January.
🇨🇾 Cyprus had an Iranian drone strike a British military base in March, hotel bookings drop 40%, and a far-right surge ahead of elections on May 24. It's 100 miles from Syria. It wants no part of this.

The War Just Moved to the Mediterranean.
Three of the stories you need to know:
Ukraine is now operating from Libyan soil — launching drone strikes on Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Mediterranean, while Russia's military networks are embedded in Libya's east. The country's two rival governments have each picked a side, deepening a split that was already fracturing the nation.
On May 20, a major EU regulation kicks in: platforms like Airbnb must share user data with governments across the continent. Cities from Paris to Barcelona have been waiting for this moment — and housing campaigners are calling it long overdue.
And Xi Jinping has now removed more senior officials than any Chinese leader since Mao — and the purge is still expanding. From the military to sports to restaurants and entertainment, no sector has been untouched. Analysts are calling it a "forever purge" — no defined enemy, no end date.
