Moon and Back Bookstore in West Medford, opened by Michelle Smith (SHA’11), flips the traditional bookstore model by organizing books the way kids actually think—by themes like trucks, dinosaurs, and magical stories. 📚

Built as a welcoming, child-first space inspired by her own kids’ reading habits, the shop focuses on making discovery intuitive and fun while creating a calm, family-friendly environment. A little over a year in, it’s seeing steady success as Smith grows it thoughtfully around her family and vision.

Most students never get the chance to shut off an airplane engine at 1,000 feet and keep flying.

Boston University’s Gliding and Soaring Club gives students hands-on access to aviation through weekly flights in a rare motor glider, remote-controlled aircraft design projects, and flight training opportunities. Whether members dream of becoming pilots, aerospace engineers, or simply want a unique weekend activity, the club combines engineering, problem-solving, and adventure while making aviation more accessible to students.

What happens when hospitality students take their learning halfway around the world?

Four BU School of Hospitality students traveled to Kenya to explore global tourism, sustainability, and community engagement. While they gained firsthand insight into the hospitality industry, they say the most meaningful lessons came from the people they met, whose generosity, cultural traditions, and sense of community left a lasting impact.

A media tradition will bite the dust come 2029, when the Academy Awards will cease its television broadcast, streaming exclusively instead on YouTube. Hollywood’s annual self-celebration has been a TV staple since the Eisenhower administration. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that YouTube, with two billion-plus viewers worldwide, “will help make the Oscars accessible to the Academy’s growing global audience.”

Does the academy’s decision, amid the decline of broadcast and cable viewership, confirm the observation by former Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell that television “is a dying medium”? We asked Charlotte Howell, a College of Communication, Boston University associate professor of film and television and director of the film and television studies program. A media historian who teaches the BU courses Streaming TV and Understanding Television, Howell’s research has covered topics as diverse as women’s sports coverage, TV as escapism, and religion and media.

Why does the US have higher death rates than other wealthy nations?

Despite leading the world in healthcare spending, the United States continues to have a lower life expectancy than other wealthy nations. Researchers identified heart disease, stroke, and other cardiometabolic conditions as the largest contributors to the gap, alongside rising deaths from drug overdoses and alcohol-related illnesses.
