Our Story
Waku is a Boston-based startup founded in early 2018 with the purpose of sharing with the world the best tasting and functional products made with ingredients directly sourced from the rich soil of Ecuador.
Both Juan and Nico were born and raised in Ecuador, a mega-diverse country in Latin America that has some of the best natural ingredients in the world, due to its fertile soil and it’s advantageous position in the middle of the world. Both founders are long-time friends from childhood and had started multiple e-commerce businesses in the past.
Moved by their passion for entrepreneurship, when Juan moved to Boston to do his MBA, the two founders wanted to do more to make a real difference in Ecuador. For their next venture, they decided to merge their entrepreneurship skills with a direct-sourcing business model that is allowing them to create direct economical impact in the livelihoods of independent Ecuadorian farmers.
Their first product was inspired by a traditional recipe from the Andes Mountains called ‘horchata lojana’. It’s a recipe of 20 herbs and flowers that has been proven and perfected through centuries of use in the Southern regions of Ecuador.. Locals drink it every day with their meals to support gut health.
