Why the U.S. got country code “1”
When the international phone numbering plan (ITU E.164) was set up, shorter country codes were given to the largest and most connected countries. The U.S. and Canada were among the most developed phone networks at the time, so they were assigned the single‑digit code `1`. On old rotary phones, dialing “1” was much faster than dialing “9” or “0”, so it made sense for the most‑called countries to have the shortest code.
