📢 Fair Share Funds Must Stay True to Public Education
We urge Massachusetts leaders to reassess the growing trend of diverting Fair Share revenues away from public education. Despite decades of underfunding, only 10% of these funds are allocated to public higher ed under the Governor’s Supplemental & FY26 budget—far from what’s needed for long-term sustainability.
🚨 Our Concern: While childcare is essential and deserves robust support, it is not public education. Yet, a growing share of Fair Share funds is being directed there, in conflict with the constitutional mandate for “quality public education and affordable public colleges and universities.”
✅ We call for at least 25-33% of Fair Share revenues to go toward public higher ed, in line with the Board of Higher Education’s recommendation.
💡 “This is about more than legal mandates—it’s about ensuring Massachusetts invests in its future,” says Bahar Akman

We’re proud to support Governor Maura Healey, Executive Office of Education Massachusetts Department of Higher Education on efforts to ensure that Massachusetts higher education reflects the diversity of our communities. The ACARE report outlines crucial changes that we have long advocated for — like direct admissions, better financial aid, effective wrap-around services—that will help underserved students thrive.
