โEโ inc.โs Neponset River Program has been in full swing this summer! Educator Tess Mahon Kuzin has been taking students from Gallivan Community Center on an exploration of their local Neponset River. One particular field trip of the program took the students to the Edgewater Food Forest. Previously an empty field, this food forest was built in 2021-2022 by the Edgewater Neighborhood Association and its dedicated community. Today, it is a space for healthy food, fitness, learning, and community, and is maintained collectively by volunteer stewards as a part of the Boston Food Forest Coalition community land trust. The students from Gallivan Community Center got to engage in the Food Forest by finding edibles berries from low-maintenance, edible food-producing plants designed to address food access in their local Mattapan neighborhood.
