After 13 years of living with type 1 diabetes, Katie Beth Hand did something she never thought possible: She stopped taking insulin.

Katie Beth is participant No. 9 in an experimental islet cell transplant study at UChicago Medicine. She received donor-derived islet cells, which are protected by ongoing infusions of Tegoprubart — a new, targeted immune therapy. Within seven weeks of her transplant, she achieved insulin independence.
