NOW ON VIEW // The Distillery Gallery is pleased to present Songs From Memory, a group exhibition curated by artist Jamieson Edson ( ). Songs From Memory explores five artists’ efforts to conjure and capture moments of nostalgia, intimacy, and indescribable feelings. Works range in medium, from processed photography to prints on drywall, but all use abstraction as a tool to emulate those just-out-of-reach life moments, the hazy memories that have blurred the contours of tangible realities.

Included artists:
Creighton Baxter
Opal Ecker DeRuvo
Jamieson Edson
Isabelle Higgins
Jacob Jackmauh

On view: October 31 - December 3, 2022

ā€˜Frankie Symonds: Gate of Heaven’ Opening reception this Saturday, July 23, 7-10pm, featuring performance by The Incontinence Project.

ā€œCreated over the last nine years, Gate Of Heaven is a body of work that tries to confront my Catholic upbringing in the 90s in Boston, ground zero for the church s*x abuse scandal, as a q***r child. Consisting primarily of paintings and sculptures, the exhibition aims to bring the viewer into a place where the wonder of childhood coexists with and is corrupted by the horrors and violence of institutional powers and systemic abuse. The work is inhabited by childhood icons, people of the cloth, law enforcement officers, and s*xual predators adrift in a bleak cesspool where hope is clung to, not as a positive gesture, but as a desperate act of survival. This is a site-specific exhibit, as the Distillery Gallery is a mere four blocks from the parish I grew up in and where the exhibit gets its name. Most of the work in the show will be available for free, as both a communist gesture and an attempt at cathartic communion.ā€

šŸ’ Tomorrow šŸ’
Join us for the opening reception for Sopheak Sam’s solo exhibition, Waiting For Enlightenment. Saturday, June 11, 7-10pm.

Sam’s multidisciplinary work, comprising drawings, paintings, artist books, and video, traces cultural hybridity, q***r futurity, religious iconography, and the fabulation of a marred political history between the U.S. and Cambodia. A child refugee born in the aftermath of the Cambodian genocide, the artist’s personal entanglement with the historicization of the Khmer experience posits the exhibition as an embodied site for individual and collective searching.
