Alexia Rowe Makes Musicals
Storyteller. Composer. Creator. Playwright. Boston-based alternative/indie artist with synesthesia.
Coincidentally the person I was thinking about in relation to this song showed up in my dreams last night. Whatever that means, if dreams mean anything at all since most of the time they’re so all over the place. And yes, I’m performing this in a car although a VW Beetle would have made more sense as far as Janis Joplin is concerned.
The full song is on IGTV.
The time has come for me to share this Kelly Clarkson ballad I guitarified and refined further under the tutelage of over the last couple of weeks. While not originally in the realm of , I’m transforming it into such almost as if I’m logging something into a diary. I’m sure the old microphone helps my vibe 😂. And coming from someone whose life seems to parallel Jenny Lee’s from Call the Midwife occasionally, I wish this candid song that sounds like it should be in a musical theatre heartbreak scene wasn’t so dang relatable. You may grace your ears with the full video on IGTV as well.
P.S. Keep on the lookout for the upcoming composition “Charles Sumner”!
Apologizing for my absence last week, I’m taking advantage of the sunny weather we’ve got here with a (promised) slightly slower and quieter version (because I’m sure my small town doesn’t want an impromptu concert 🤪) of Tanya’s little cabaret number from Fievel Goes West.
The full video is on IGTV, and if you were in Massachusetts today I hope you made an escapade to the beach like a lot of people around here I know. ☀️🦢🏖🦆☀️
I love the folk songs that provide an air of mystery, especially this one by (though I slowed it down a lot more here). It sounds like it belongs in a scene in a musical where someone's lost in the woods. As I'm writing this, I'm watching a slow, gorgeous snowfall from some foresty area in the middle of nowhere, and several cats just ran through here like they own the place (at least they weren't wolves 🐺, which one would expect this time of year). Since it's snowing everywhere even in places where it shouldn't be, enjoy the snow for this snow baby here while it lasts!
I've got a longer video on IGTV.
In honor of Black History Month, we decided to do a little Scott Joplin-inspired syncopation, especially since I didn't trust my narrowly-avoided-the-flu vocal cords to sing something today 😖. It's a little short, but alas, happy Friday. Listen to some ragtime and blues for me.
Those of you who know me outside of my theatrical endeavors know that I love all the indie musicians. Especially the ones who nobody really knows about. In fact, I hosted a radio show once upon a time where I mostly played their music! Which is why I gift to you my cover of "Speck" by . Go and listen to her for me. And another fun fact: we even went to the same college (not at the same time obviously), so this is a particular must-hear for all the Fighting Scots.
Happy Frettin' Friday!

P.S. The trade bead necklace I'm wearing here is $20 at my store on Etsy. You can get it here as a great Valentine's Day gift for all you flower children out there: https://www.etsy.com/listing/898311003/african-ceramic-beaded-necklace?ref=shop_home_active_13
I need a little bit of Maria Luna's joy and free-spiritedness today. And I just realized I forgot to wear the pink 🤪....oh well. Happy Frettin' Friday.
My brother and I don't always agree on a lot of things music-wise but one thing we both know is that this is the best song from Rent (besides the one song in the AIDS support group that made my mom cry). We may only be 31,260 hours into the new year (yes, I calculated it. I'm a bit of a nerd 😋) but we entered a new chapter earlier this week and exactly as this ensemble song that I jazzed up to be a solo says, we need to measure in love. What the world needs is love.

Someone should have told 16-year-old me that with all the equipment I could just record a song in my attic and essentially produce it myself. Whoever knew editing vocals was such hard (but actually a lot of fun) work? That’s my Monday right now. And when the song is available to be listened to, it’s going to be my whole month.
Oh yeah, and the glasses I’m wearing are not my new ones. They’re just some blue-blockers that I found in a Staples one day. Like them? You can get them here: https://grymattr.com/collections/joe-mimran-blue-light-glasses/products/studious-blue-light-glasses?lshst=collection.
And the headphones? They were a gift. Ask my dad.
Enjoy the start of your week, and don’t be like Garfield 😹
