Absolutely..."Head Start works. It’s something we should strengthen, not turn our backs on."

Head Start is a critical early education and care program that serves the whole family with its two generational approach with proven success. Did you know that in MA Community Action Agencies serve more than half of the Head Start children and are committed to continuing to do so.

On August 31, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson stood in the White House Rose Garden and announced the extension of Head Start.

What started as a summer pilot — one that enrolled more than 561,000 children in its first year — was expanded into year-round centers for children aged 3 and older, with continued summer programming and follow-through services like home visits and field trips for families.

Sixty-one years later, that commitment is still being honored by the hundreds of thousands of Head Start staff who show up every day for children and families across the country.

Early Education & Care is not only critical in preparing children to enter the K-12 system by promoting cognitive growth, meeting their physical needs and supporting their social and emotional development, but also engages families and provides supports and resources they need.
