$200,000 Awarded in Grants to Support Productions at Strand Theatre “The Strand Theatre has been an iconic landmark in the Dorchester neighborhood for more than a century, and it’s great to see such a diverse group of presenters sharing their work at the theater over the next year,” said Mayor Michelle Wu.
Over the past few years, I've been reconstructing the Strand's performance history. This leads to a lot of online searches using various keywords. "Strand Theater," "Uphams Corner Strand" and "Dorchester Strand" have yielded a wealth of results.
"543 Columbia Road" -- our street address -- brings up a lot of neighborhood history. It also gives some returns based on that street address in other cities.
543 Columbia Road, Petersburg, Va, for example, is a lovely one-family home. It lists for about $175,000.
543 Columbia Road, Egg Harbor, NJ, is also a lovely single family home, listing for about $450,000.
The average single-family home in Boston, however, costs over $750,000.

While it's delightful to have Boston Modern Orchestra Project and their production of "X" at the Strand, it's not the first play about Malcolm X performed here. In January, 1993, we featured "When the Chickens Come Home to Roost" by Laurence Holder on our stage. The Off-Broadway production featured a young Denzel Washington as Malcolm.
