This week in Washington, we are writing for reproductive rights. A generation has passed since the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade. Over the past year, according to Daily Kos, the present administration has "restricted access to health care for millions of people, defunded Planned Parenthood, attacked medication abortion and ended requirements that hospitals provide life-saving abortion care." The administration has "cut funding for reproductive health care providers that offer a range of essential services, including cancer screenings and preventive care, making it harder for workers to access contraception and safe abortion services. They have backed state level laws that restrict abortion access, undermining our freedoms and jeopardizing our safety." We stand with Reproductive Freedom For All, to protect our sisters, daughters, mothers, aunts and nieces. This week in Washington, we are writing to save the planet. According to Stop the Money Pipeline, Citibank is "one of the greatest funders of fossil fuels in the world." The bank has contributed more money to fossil fuel expansion since 2016 than any other bank in the entire world." We stand with Stop the Money Pipeline in urging Costco to stop taking money from Citibank. In addition to fighting for civil rights, Costco has preserved it's diversity and inclusion intitiatives, bucking the trend initiated by the federal government. It is the 3rd largest retailer in the world and leads the charge when it comes to civil rights & diversity and we hope to find them working to protect our environment. Banks care about keeping their clients and "if Costco urges Citibank to clean up its act or threatens to leave all together, then Citibank will be forced to pursue better policies. Thousands of Costco members and concerned shoppers have filled out feedback forms, petitioned at warehouses and sent emails and postcards to the retailers leadership. Dozens of members and shareholders have taken the brave step of showing up to protest at Costco headquarters. The coporation has agreed to meet with a representative group of shareholders to hear our concerns." This week in Washington, we are writing for Planned Parenthood. We will not go back to an era of back alley abortions and coat hangers taking the place of medical care. Under the present Administration, Congress passed a law "defunding Planned Parenthood, putting more than 1.1 million patients at risk of losing access to care,” according to Daily Kos. Conservatives have "targeted access to medication abortion by weaponizing junk science about Mifepristone, a safe and effective medicine for abortions and miscarriages." According to Planned Parenthood Action Fund this government has "eroded the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which has protected hospital emergency care, including abortion, for nearly 40 years.” The conduct of the current Administration is unlawful and dangerous. “Reproductive rights are critical health care." Many of us know Planned Parenthood in our community, providing birth control, medical care and family planning. The GOP doesn't understand that decisions about reproductive health belong between a patient and their doctor not between Congress and the Courts. This week in Washington, we are writing for affordable loans. For generations, usury laws have been on the books throughout the states and use to be present for the federal government. On January 9th, 2026 acccording to The New York Times, the Administration put a one year cap on credit card interest rates at 10 %. This is a welcome decision but we are troubled by the present closure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, in the fight against predatory lending by credit card companies. We favor bank exams and remember the Great Recession when the big banks while leading through the sub-prime mortgage lending crises, led our nation's economy off a fiscal cliff. Litigation has prevented the closure of CPFB. Before the announcement from the administration, credit card companies charged 20-30% interest in credit, resembling pay day loans, a predatory practice that punishes those seeking assistance in our nation's economy. Credit card companies "make $ 130 billion a year off interest and fees, according to a 2024 consumer bureau estimate," as quoted in The New York Times. It is time to protect the American consumer from predatory lending practices. Sign the petition here.

Aug. 9th - Int’l Indigenous People’s Day

This week in Washington, we are writing for community policing. First responders must be diversified because police are being asked to shoulder a burden that should fall to social workers, paramedics and animal control. 911 calls too often end in an arrest, incarceration or worse. We can't ask law enforcement to solve every problem and assigning officers to a given community and neighborhood so that patrolmen are on a first name basis with the citizens they protect is one of many solutions available. Paramedics can respond to phone calls for officers instead of uniformed law enforcement. De-escalation training for first responders can use communication to respond to conflicts in our communities. Alternative first responders in 130 communities, according to Friedman, Markham & Neath @ the Policing Project at NYU Law, are responding to calls across the country and relieving the burden on overworked police departments. Homelessness, substance abuse and domestic disputes can be answered in ways that don't lead to incarceration, arrests or conflict.
