Linked to this post is a blank email template addressed to Ruthanne Fuller and all of the Newton city counselors. All you have to do is fill in your name. We look forward to more successful protests in the future.

$440M Newton Budget: Cuts, But Not 'To The Bone' 06/07/2020

Hey everybody, attached to this post is the City of Newton's web page detailing the proposed budget for the fiscal year of 2021. There, you can see exactly what we'll be fighting against later today. Ask yourself why, in the midst of budget cuts across the board, the Newton Police Department, which has proven itself to be complicit in systemic racism, is receiving additional funding. Also attached is a Patch article that summarizes the proposed budget. Keep in mind that in this article, which was published last month, Mayor Fuller is quoted promising that layoffs will be limited to a small number of temporary furloughs. This has proven to be untrue: last week, a group of educators (no official number has been released yet), consisting largely of employees in Special Education departments, received notices of termination as a result of impending cuts to the Newton Public Schools budget. In context with the increased funding that the Newton Police Department is set to receive in the 2021 fiscal year, this decision favors the racist institution of the Police over those who serve some of our community's most disadvantaged children. If this seems backwards to you, make your voice heard by joining our march from Boyden Park to City Hall today at 2:00 and let the city administration know that you oppose this unjust proposal.
