The Boston Ujima Project is organizing neighbors, workers, business owners and investors to create a community-controlled economy in Greater Boston.

The Boston Ujima Project is an ecosystem designed to strengthen local economic control and recenter economic power in low income communities and communities of color in Boston. Ujima (oo-JEE-mah) is a Swahili word, the celebrated Kwanzaa principle for โ€œcollective work and responsibility.โ€ Ujima inspires us to take responsibility for our communities, to see our neighborโ€™s problems as our own, and t

๐ŸŒŸ Join us this month at Fields Corner Business Lab for Ujima Wednesdays!

Last night we kicked off June's theme, Framing the Future: Mutual Aid & Institution-Building, with an intimate talkback conversation featuring Donna Bivens and Teddy White.

Together, we reflected on the long history of mutual aid and how those traditions continue to shape how we care for one another today. Through stories of shame, grief, and joy, participants shared moments when community showed up, and support helped them.

Thank you to Donna and Teddy for guiding the conversation, to our members for sharing so openly, to Fields Corner Business Lab for hosting us, and to Fresh Food Generation for the delicious food.

Join us throughout June as we continue exploring community based tools like mutual credit, rotating savings circles, and shared resource networks, while imagining what it takes to build the futures our communities deserve.

Gotta Have Faith 06/04/2026

โ˜€๏ธ We invite people from different faith traditions (or any spirituality!) who are motivated by social justice to deepen our vision of economic justice, and learn about each others social justice work. Join us to build new and deepen existing individual/ communal relationships as a means of building power and connection.

Organized by the Anchor Institutions Organizing Member Team, the Interfaith Network has three principal aims:

- Promote collective work and responsibility (Ujima) for the common good.
- Expand Boston Ujima Project's own network of support.
- Advance an economy that supports Black-owned businesses in Boston and that is rooted in values of solidarity.

Gather with us next week for a rich dialogue, catered in-house by Nubian Markets!

๐ŸŒŽ Last month, Ujima had the opportunity to table at Wake Up the Earth in Jamaica Plain!

The first Wake Up the Earth took place in 1979. It was a celebration of the land and community that fought for the South-West Corridor to not turn into a highway, but be used for community. The festival continues to bring together neighbors, community members, grassroots organizations, cultural workers and many more to remind us that another Boston can always be made possible!

We are so grateful to continue to table and see our members, supporters, and those curious about the work we do! And special thanks to the volunteers that held it down!

New releases from Ujima Press. Earlier this month, we launched two new publications. Available next month at the We Create the World Zine Fair and coming soon to our online store.

Rooted in our belief that economic democracy is both a material and cultural project, these publications document conversations, ideas, and practices emerging from the people we work alongside.
