Falls are the top cause of injuries that land older adults (age 65 and up) in the ER. Many factors related to getting older can increase fall risk, from medications to balance issues.

Prevention measures like home safety checks looking for hazards like poor lighting and clutter, exercise programs that help improve balance, coordination, and strength, and talking with healthcare providers about medications and chronic health conditions can help reduce the risk.

This year's theme of the World Health Organization's is non-communicable diseases, which include many of the chronic conditions providers treat every day. But patients with these conditions have more frequent interactions with the healthcare system, and that increases their risk of being harmed by mistakes, errors, delays, and poor communication.

Simulation is actually one of the tools that can help build a culture of awareness and accountability. Many of the harms that come to patients are preventable, but the systems have to be in place to catch them.

Sepsis is the body's overwhelming response to an infection. The early warning signs can be subtle, but sepsis moves fast and can be fatal within hours. Around the world, someone dies from sepsis every 2.8 seconds.

Warning signs of sepsis can include:
• Fever or low body temperature
• Warm, clammy skin
• Fast heart rate
• Low blood pressure
• Rapid breathing
• Rash (red, mottled)
• Confusion, disorientation
• Extreme pain
• A "feeling of impending doom” (like you’re going to die)

First aid training saves lives, and it's not limited to people who work in healthcare! You can learn how to perform CPR, tend to injuries, and help someone who is choking. Some courses can even be done online in a weekend for less than a streaming subscription. If you want to learn in-person, your community probably offers hands-on First Aid courses with instructors at community centers, schools, and public safety buildings.

Naloxone, known as Narcan, is a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. You do NOT have to be a medical professional to learn how to give Narcan.

You can even do training online through organizations like the Red Cross and the CDC. Many awareness groups also offer education and resources about overdose prevention.
