On the latest podcast episode, I got to catch up with Amy Larson ( ) - the product genius, market hustler and foodie feminist behind both Overseasoned and .ri . Amy is one of those people you can't help but root for - she's got a totally unique concept, she's always willing to experiment and try something new, she's a hard worker but also such a fun hang.
Our conversation covers a lot of ground, including:
🧄 How Amy combined her love of food and feminism to start the company
🕵️♀️ The importance of following your curiosity
✈️ How to know it's time to go from side hustle to all-in
💓 The value of showing up and embracing failure
🌱 The process of expansion and when to delegate
Plus a lot of bobbing and weaving to surrender to the chaos of small business.
Tune in wherever you get your podcasts!

Good for you, good for the economy!!
Small businesses do so much to enrich our communities, but they aren't volunteer organizations! They aren't subsidized! They aren't guaranteed. Every time you spend money with a small biz - your local gift shop that knows you by name, the wine store that remembers your preferences, the mom and pop grocery that stocks your fave artisan jam - you are supporting a more vibrant, and healthy community.
Do your part! Shop small.

The future of indie retail can feel like it's in an anxious attached relationship with these ding dang apps and that ....doesn't feel amazing.
That's why I was so excited when my friend (and amazing producer of our podcast, Retail For The Rest Of Us), Amelia, invited me on Off The Grid to dive into the current state of social media marketing for product based businesses.
Tune in to hear us discuss how social media has rapidly shifted for retailers and why chasing the algorithm might be the worst sales strategy in your playbook. We also get into—
✨Whether or not social media currently provides meaningful traffic
✨Where social media for retail can actually shine (and where it definitely doesn’t)
✨My favorite non-social media marketing methods
✨How knowing your numbers can help you prioritize
I hope you enjoy this chat and HIGHLY recommend subscribing and binging all the other episodes Amelia has released - especially if you're feeling like you and social might need to consciously uncouple.

It's always national small business day around here. Why? Because the work you do really does matter. Love ya!

I've been thinking about quitting my business...
And I know I'm not alone.
It is a hard time to be a human being, let alone a small business owner, so it's only natural that you'd daydream about letting it all go.
In our moments of weakness, maybe you've searched Google for marketing jobs or "how to sell a business" only to remember with a shudder that the worst day working for yourself is better than the best working for someone else. It's cliche for a reason.
I want to propose something else, a compromise if you will.
Instead of saying f**k it and throwing in the towel, let's quit what doesn't work for us - the habits, the "necessary evils", the tools, the pace, the beliefs, the things everyone does but just don't work for us.
Indie retail is unlike any other business - sure, there are best practices, but each shop has it's own energy and perspective, which means you can make your approach to business unique, too.
If it works, work it... and if it doesn't 👋
If there is one thing you could quit in your business TODAY, what would it be?

Here's how we can make retail feel good:
🙌 HUMAN-CENTERED 🙌
✨We value the emotional and energetic aspects of running a business - if you don’t feel good, your business won’t either.
✨ We strive to create an inclusive space centered around empathy, curiosity and nuance. We expect our community do the same.
👯♀️COMMUNITY FIRST👯♀️
✨We value relationships over transactions - we are here to flip the script on sleazy sales tactics.
✨ We believe small biz can change "business-as-usual" - prioritizing impact and experience as highly as bottom line.
🙃 CAPITALIST CRITICAL 🙃
✨Commerce and capitalism are not synonyms. There are many ways to divest from capitalism within your small business.
✨ Moving slowly and questioning everything is sort of our thing. We don't do "necessary evils".
