Wow Cassandra 🙏🏾🤎 As I prepare to travel to Rio this week to perform at Rock in Rio, I am reflecting on my first trip to Brazil at 22 years old as a member of the Cassandra Wilson tour. I learned so much from her and I am so sad she has passed away. She had an unmistakable vocal tone, phrasing and her approach of weaving folkloric, R&B and diasporic music together with experimental and popular genres had a major impact on me. She sounded like the south. Her Mississippi heritage was always present in everything no mater how expansive her artistry evolved. We toured all around the world for a few years, I learned a lot about what it means to be a bandleader. Here is a clip of us being interviewed on the Programa do Jô, hosted by Jô Soares in 2009.

I also had the honor of accompanying the legendary Abbey Lincoln some during this time period. One sweltering summer day, the band and I arrived to Tompkins Square park for a performance with Ms Lincoln. Just moments before going on we were informed that Ms Wilson would be filling in for her and we would accompany her instead. Once Cassandra arrived, we went onstage and performed the set completely unrehearsed. We hadn't even met before, our first introduction to each other was thru the music. Unknowingly, that was my audition. She was one of the first people to take me on tour around the world, the great Cassandra Wilson. Sending our condolences to the family.
