Scammers know exactly how to manipulate our emotions to gain access to our money and personal information.

To protect your household and older relatives this Elder Justice Awareness Month, it helps to understand their three-step playbook:

1. They pretend to be familiar: They call or message pretending to represent a well-known company, utility provider, or organization you already trust.
2. They invent a problem: They claim there is "suspicious activity" on your financial accounts and offer to connect you with a fake government "helper."
3. They force immediate action: They use high-pressure scare tactics, telling you to move your money immediately to "protect" it.
Real organizations and government agencies will never pressure you to transfer funds over the phone. Talk about these three signs openly with older neighbors and loved ones.

Connection often grows when we have a place to gather. A neighborhood garden can create that space, offering a low-pressure way to spend time outside, work toward a shared goal and see familiar faces over time.

Gardening with others or volunteering for a local beautification project in your neighborhood can support healthy aging through physical activity and socializing. They can also help build more resilient communities by strengthening neighborhood connectedness and giving people something meaningful to care for and invest in together. Your key to connection might be growing right around the corner.
