Professor Phillips will discuss the musical lives of African American community members in Beaver Dam, North Carolina. Her talk draws from Folk-Legacy Records’ archival song recordings featuring Mount Olive Baptist Church congregation members and interviews with members of Beaver Dam’s historic Black community to illustrate the profound presence and influence of African American musical traditions in Appalachian culture.
