Right now, there is a lot of unintentional harm to Trans/Non-Binary folx being caused in spiritual & healing spaces.
A general lack of awareness around the complexities of gender identity results in a culture that is not safe or inclusive for Trans ppl. Off-hand comments can send folx reeling with dysphoria, and then they remove themselves from those spaces. This has big impacts:
1. Spiritual/healing communities are impoverished from missing out on Trans perspectives.
2. Trans ppl lose access to most healing & spiritual spaces.
But how could you know if no one ever told you?
If you don’t have a safe space to learn and ask questions? Gender is complex and messy, and involves examining and unpacking ones’ own social programming in relation to gender.
Your heart is in the right place, but you need a safe container for this learning to occur. That's why we created Expanding Beyond Gender: Trans/Non-Binary Literacy for Spirituals and Healers.

🎶CAT-THEMED VOICE WARM UP! "Purrs & Pigeons" is a unvoiced/voiced pairing of a semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercise. It's a great way to ensure your breath is moving and develop healthy "flow" phonation in your vocal technique to support a lifetime of singing!

Description of this particular exercise:
Start with the "purr" and then add voice to make it a "pigeon". Purring is is unvoiced tongue roll, and it gets breath going which needs to be pretty well engaged for the tongue to actually roll; without stopping add voice to make the "pigeon" (or like a rolled 'r' in italian or spanish). The only thing that changes between the purr and pigeon is your vocal folds coming together to vibrate. This way of practicing with an unvoiced roll or trill and then adding voice (without pausing in between) creates the muscle memory of healthy vocal onset and flow phonation because your breath is already moving before you activate the voice. This kind of work is called semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT)- google that term if you feel like geeking out! There's tonnes of great research about how beneficial SOVT exercises are to vocal health, singing technique and resonance.
You can do this purr/pigeon all over your range to practice your breathing and vocal onsets. If you're practicing a song, try to sing every phrase on a pigeon before you do it with the lyrics or open vowels. This will ensure you have good breath support throughout the whole thing.

I LOVE working with cat energy (and other animals!) for singers because it's a super EFFECTIVE way to GET US OUT OF OUR HEADS and INTO our bodies!
Dropping into our bodies with vocal playtime is one of the best ways I know to access/induce beginner's mind, receptivity to learning, and build neuroplasticity. MEOW! ^.^

Two polar opposite cat vibes- yowling and whining. Both offer unique benefits to the singing and speaking voice!
Yowling helps us get a full even closure of the vocal folds (the vocalis muscle- vocal cords are the ligaments connetected to the muscle) AND helps us produce 'twang", 'brightness' or high overtones in the sound. Singing or speaking with twang helps the voice carry and be heard over an orchestra, band, or crowd!
According to Dr. Daniel Robinson, twang refers to the "focused resonance achieved when the epiglottis is shaped by the function of the aryepiglottic fold to form the laryngopharynx. In lay[person's] terms, a new resonating chamber is formed which in turn produces a bright forward sound that we call ‘Twang’... Research has shown that a singer who employs twang in either their spoken or sung voice production will achieve up to 600% more volume (15db) with no more effort. Twang is highly efficient in its use of air and it allows the singer to employ far less physical exertion in their vocal production."
