The Idaho Center for the Book at Albertsons Library is proud to feature “Four Treasures of the Sky” tomorrow August 24 @‌librarycongress National Book Festival in Washington D.C! 🎉

“Four Treasures of the Sky” is a dazzling debut novel inspired by a true event in Idaho’s history. It introduces Daiyu, a fictional heroine who fights to claim her own story after being kidnapped and taken from China to America in the 1880s. Daiyu’s journey unfolds against the backdrop of intense anti-Chinese sentiment following the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. The book has earned many accolades including being named a New York Times Notable Book and Idaho Book of the Year in 2022.
Author Jenny Tinghui Zhang was born in Changchun, China, and now calls Austin, Texas home. Her work has graced the pages of many notable publications, and “Four Treasures” is her debut novel. Don’t miss this poignant exploration of resilience and the pursuit of one’s own story that Boise Public Radio called “an urgent story to explore.”

The Idaho Center for the Book at Albertsons Library is excited to feature “It’s Her Story: Sacajawea” by Randy’L Teton tomorrow August 24 at the National Book Festival in Washington D.C! 🎉

“It’s Her Story: Sacajawea” is a new children's graphic novel written and illustrated by members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho. Sacajawea was the brilliant Shoshone girl who was the only female member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. The book brings to life her courage and resilience as she navigates unmapped territories and guides the expedition to the Pacific Ocean.

Author Randy’L Teton served as the model for the Sacajawea U.S. dollar coin that was released in 2000. Now, Teton shares the empowering tale of Sacajawea to inspire and educate young readers about her indomitable spirit. The book is beautifully illustrated by Aly McKnight. 😍

📚 Books have a unique power—they can act as mirrors, reflecting our own experiences, or as windows, offering insights into different perspectives. This week, our Mirrors and Windows book discussion, led by Lisa Phillips, vice provost for community engagement and belonging, delved into "The Color of Law," by Richard Rothstein, a profoundly impactful exploration of housing segregation in the US.

🔍 Laurie Cavey, a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, recommended this eye-opening read, noting its profound effect on her perspective. She says the book “made a huge impact on me and how I thought about housing segregation in the US.”

As we engage with literature that challenges our understanding and broadens our horizons, we continue to foster a culture of empathy, awareness, and growth.

What books have served as mirrors or windows for you lately? Share your recommendations below!
