The Redside Foundation
Supporting the health and strength of the professional outdoor guiding community. Why the name?
Inspiration for the Redside Foundation
The Redside Foundation was created (2010) in loving memory of longtime Idaho River Guide Telly Evans (1974-2010). Managing your finances in today's world isn't easy, especially when inflation makes everything cost more. However, with a positive commitment, basic education, and consistency, achieving your personal finance goals is doable.
The commitment and consistency needed to be successful are personal, but how and where to learn money management skills is available for free to anyone. Here’s some great resources to start with:
Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) offers excellent free courses on personal finance, investing basics, and economics that are helpful for beginners to experts.
NerdWallet (nerdwallet.com/finance) and Investopedia (Investopedia.com/personal-finance) both offer helpful articles on nearly any financial topic. Investopedia’s personal finance dictionary is especially useful for learning terms.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (consumerfinance.gov) is a government website with unbiased guides on budgeting, debt, and credit.
Ramsey Solutions. (ramseysolutions.com) If you're looking for a step by step program to follow about reducing debt and building wealth, Ramsey Solutions offers their seven “Baby Step” program with daily podcast support.
If you’d like to talk about any of these resources or your own personal finance goals and challenges, the Redside Foundation offers guides free, confidential financial coaching appointments with one of our volunteer financial coaches (who also happen to be guides and get the particular challenges). Check out the link in our bio for more information and to sign up for an appointment.

This Thursday! Sometimes the people who guide others need a hand themselves. Join the Redside Foundation and Sunlight Sports for Pint Night, and find out about the work that is happening right now to make sure that our guides and outfitters get the support they deserve.
The evening will include a short film, an overview of resources, and time to talk with the people doing the work. Open to any guide or outfitter in the Bighorn Basin, anyone who works alongside them, and anyone who wants to understand what the community needs.
Every Thursday at Pint Night, we offer complimentary beer or non-alcoholic beverages to anyone with a Sunlight pint glass. Don’t have one yet? You can purchase a limited-edition glass at the event. 100% of proceeds go directly to one of our five local nonprofit partners that get kids outside.

How to support a guide in your life:
If someone you love is a guide, here's what helps:
1. Understand their schedule is non-negotiable during season
2. Don't take communication gaps personally
3. Ask specific questions ('How are you managing stress?' vs 'How are you?')
4. Recognize that their work is physically, mentally, & emotionally demanding
5. Share resources like The Redside Foundation
6. Celebrate their professional passion and skills
Guide life is extraordinary, but it's not easy.
Share this post with someone who loves a guide. 💚
And guides: share this with your people so they understand how to show up for you.

Recently, we caught up with Jeffe Aronson, a legend in his own right, who cares deeply about the guiding community, who he calls his 'pards'.
We were chatting about the unique challenges guides face and agreed that one of the toughest is the transitions - between crews/places, between seasons, and in and out of guiding. That transition between the amazing feeling feeling of being in the most beautiful places with incredible people and then feeling unmoored, alone, or 'exceptionally unexceptional' when the season is over.
Jeffe asked us to pass along a message: "I would have called the Guide Helpline had I known about it when I retired in 2019. Leaving the Middle Fork and the Grand Canyon, my whole life for 47 years, just about killed me. My heart wept for a long time. I got lucky twice over to have a wonderful wife and dog and off-grid home on a river or I’m pretty sure I’d have checked out. Use this service old pards. It’s a sign of inner strength, is offered with love and respect, and can be accepted likewise."
We're here whenever you need us - you can call or text the Guide Helpline 208-740-1192 any time you need support. Whether its transitions, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, relationships, or anything else, we've got your back.
