Mental focus is needed. Our brains obsorbs life trauma. When a person is experiencing a traumatic event or experiencing extreme fear, their "Fear Circuitry" may kick in and the prefrontal cortex begins to function less effectively. This means that in the midst of trauma, a person may not be able to think through the situation and make decisions. You may experience low dopamine. You may experience procrastination. Or you can become a functional depressant which means you get up everyday go to work or go to school and then when you are finished you go home and stay in your happy place until it’s time to go to work again.
