Drug mule. International drug trafficking. Alcoholism. Homelessness. A fugitive on the run. And somehow… God wasn’t finished with him.

Ian opens up about the choices that took him around the world and eventually brought him to rock bottom. He shares what happened when he opened a Bible in Spain, the dream that God gave him, and how his understanding of Jesus Christ, salvation, surrender, and identity began to change.

He is a God of restoration

Day 4
“Nothing is lost with Christ, in Him we find real treasure”
Reading: Isaiah 61:1-7

I felt like I wasted so much time in my life on things that were so meaningless. When I became a follower of Jesus I thought to myself “what a waste of time all this was, wasting my time on worldly pleasures that gave no return. What a waste of time chasing after things to fill an empty heart”. I spent so much time fishing for fulfillment in other ponds and streams for twenty two years that it was all a waste. But God showed me that one I needed to go through those times. They weren’t a waste because God will eventually use those experiences for His good. So when I thought that I wasted my time God showed me it wasn’t a waste. I could have easily accepted this feeling of being robbed, jipped, ripped off, but God filled me with great joy in knowing that He restores and brings new life. I love the way Isaiah captures this in chapter sixty-one of his prophetic writings.

Let’s quickly paint the picture. Isaiah is a book of promises in the midst of rebellion. God’s people Israel have stubbornly refused to follow God and uphold His decrees and because of that they have found themselves in more trouble than they would like. Two major armies come against Israel as a result of their rejection of God and Israel falls into the hands of their enemies. But in the midst of their captivity God reveals promises of their freedom and restoration. This glimpse of Hope from God who never forgot His people and never held back His promises from them speaks.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion” Isaiah 61:1-3a

God in His grace and mercy see’s our current situations and our trials and disappointments. And in His knowing He desires to bring a shift to our lives and restore what our worldly captivity has stolen. God is none too pleased with the way the world has taken advantage of His creation. He wants to avenge our captivity and the one who robbed you of your joy. In the next set of verses He says that the Lord wants to take your ashes and give you a crown of beauty, He will replace your mourning and give you gladness, and remove despair and clothe you in praise. What the world tried to take from you will be restored to you when you turn to the Lord. What a beautiful picture of how the world works versus how the Lord works. When we turn to Jesus and turn from the false promises of the world and our flesh we receive our true inheritance and God reveals our true identity. In verse six He says that we will be called priests of the Lord and ministers of our God. God will appoint you to a favorable position when He takes you from a lowly position. His plans and purposes for your life will be restored and revealed.

“Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours”. Isaiah 61:7

God will take it from you. Whatever has been given to you from worldly living and disappointment, from rejection, from failures and mistakes that you have made, God has an inheritance that is so beautiful for you. He wants to lavish His love on you and show you how beautiful and wonderful you are to Him. Would you receive the love of Jesus today? Would you lay your heart before the one who loves you unconditionally and let Him take your pain, your sorrow, your disappointments and shame and let Him restore your true beauty?

Point to ponder: The world often robs us of true joy. We easily fall into the trap of selling ourselves short to receive what we believe will truly make us happy. But true joy will only come from God who knows who you are and fills you with unconditional love and fullness of joy.

Question for reflection: Where have you been looking for happiness and just come up empty handed? Could you surrender your desires to God? Give it over to God today He has more for you than you can imagine.
