BARCLAY Performing Arts

Building pictures. Connection. Working with intention. Creating art and storytelling, one frame at a time.

A great director, John Barclay, once said that you should be able to photograph any moment of a show and either understand the power balance, the emotions being navigated, or be drawn into what came before or is coming after that frame. If you can’t, something is missing.

We work hard in rehearsals to look at and find these moments. What we are seeing and understanding, what we are missing, and how to flow these moments together to create the greater, impactful story and experience that our audience will connect with.

Don’t miss how these frames from ALICE BY HEART all come to life, October 17th & 18th, supported by the gorgeous music of the great Duncan Sheik 🙏🏻💙

Join us for this beautiful adventure as we blend the themes of our Fall/Winter season with our Spring conversations and take our community on a magical journey that is important and beautiful for all ages 💫

Our community had the great honor of welcoming the incredible Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, as well as the original company of SPRING AWAKENING, into our home in 2018 at a time when our students and greater community needed that support in serious ways. The opportunity to work with them and talk about the piece and what their art meant to them and the world, while we were working on the piece ourselves, made a lifelong impact on us and the way our company moved forward with art, storytelling, and who we want to be in this world.

As we moved into production of ALICE BY HEART earlier this fall, we carried this intention and heart with us. It was a privilege to begin another Sater & Sheik piece.

As the world mourns the loss of the incredible Duncan Sheik, we mourn with them. An unparalleled artist of our time and generous and thoughtful human being, we feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunities we had to get to understand just how beautiful his work truly is, and to have had him come to our side to support us and our brave students.

As we move ALICE BY HEART forward and into production in October, we will carry what we learned from him and work with even greater care, intention, and heart to bring this piece to our community in a way that will honor his legacy and commitment to the young people of this world to the very best of what we can produce and offer, with full hearts.

Our hearts go out to Steven, Duncan’s family, and the whole original SPRING AWAKENING community during this extremely difficult time.

An icon of our generation, and with ALICE and SPRING AWAKENING at the forefront of the theatre community right now, we are at peace knowing that Duncan Sheik will indeed live on in many ways, forever. We know he’s already still living on within our walls and hearts.
