🚁 FAU’s CA-AI Hovering Owls take on the DARPA Lift Challenge.

The Hovering Owls, a team from Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Connected Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence (CA-AI) within the College of Engineering and Computer Science, competed in the DARPA Lift Challenge, putting their heavy-lift autonomous aircraft to the test alongside teams from across the country.

Out of 489 total applications, 132 teams were invited to compete, and 76 teams checked in for the competition at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, OH. The Hovering Owls were one of 62 teams to clear all safety checks and complete a qualifying run. They achieved a 2.16:1 payload-to-weight ratio by lifting 112 pounds with an aircraft weighing 52 pounds.

The Hovering Owls were one of just two university teams to demonstrate a ratio above 2:1 by the end of the competition.

The competition gave FAU Engineering students and researchers the opportunity to put autonomous flight technology to the test on a national stage while tackling the challenges of heavy-lift autonomous aviation.

Race Day at the Florida Atlantic University College of Engineering and Computer Science! 🤖

After multiple lab sessions building their remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), FAU Engineering students brought their designs to the pool at Engineering West to put them to the test.

From achieving buoyancy to maneuvering their ROVs underwater, students applied engineering skills, teamwork, and problem-solving in a hands-on challenge.

💧 Protecting Florida’s waterways through engineering and AI.

Researchers in the Florida Atlantic University College of Engineering and Computer Science have received an $800,475 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop an AI-guided system designed to remove excess phosphorus — a major driver of harmful algal blooms — from freshwater systems.

Led by Professor Masoud Jahandar Lashaki, Ph.D., the FAU team will combine artificial intelligence, environmental engineering, and 3D printing to create reusable structures made from sargassum that capture phosphorus from water and lake sediments.

The team will test the technology in Lake Okeechobee to improve water quality, reduce harmful algal blooms, and develop a scalable solution that could be adapted for waterways across the U.S. and around the world.

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is offering two weeklong, hands-on bootcamps designed to build practical skills in artificial intelligence:

🔹 Practical AI for Cybersecurity: Aug. 17–21 | 9–11 a.m.
🔹 Practical AI for Learning and Research: Aug. 17–21 | 5–7 p.m.

Free for FAU students, faculty, and staff.

Participants will gain hands-on experience applying AI to cybersecurity, learning, research, and everyday academic work.
