What does a really long tennis match look like?
The benchmark makes the difference almost absurd. A typical men’s singles match lasts around 1 hour 38 minutes, while these matches pushed past six hours. And then there is Isner–Mahut: 11 hours 5 minutes, spread across three days at Wimbledon.
But the most extraordinary line on this chart may be Vicki Nelson vs. Jean Hepner.
In 1984, Nelson beat Hepner 6–4, 7–6 (13–11) in Richmond. Only two sets — yet the match lasted 6 hours 31 minutes. The second-set tiebreak alone lasted 1 hour 47 minutes, according to the WTA record book.
Why?
One point lasted 29 minutes and 643 shots — still recorded as the longest rally in professional tennis history. Nelson eventually won the point, the tiebreak and the match.
That single rally lasted longer than many entire sets today.
And it puts the chart into perspective: Nelson–Hepner required only two sets to reach a duration comparable to some of the longest five-set battles ever played.
Sometimes the number of sets tells you very little about how exhausting a tennis match really was.

WHO ARE THE 20 GREATEST TENNIS PLAYERS OF ALL TIME?
We knew this ranking would create debate. That is exactly why we did not want to publish a list without showing how it was built.
Our model compares players across eras using:
• Grand Slam achievements, adjusted for historical opportunity
• Weeks at world No. 1
• Career titles and major non-Slam titles
• Success across different surfaces
• Longevity at the highest level
• Strength and depth of competition
• Cultural impact on tennis and society
Men and women are ranked together because we are comparing greatness within their respective competitive environments. This is not about who would defeat whom in a match. It is about dominance, achievement, longevity and impact.
No model can eliminate judgment completely. The important thing is to disclose the assumptions, apply the criteria consistently and allow everyone to question the results.
The full methodology, scoring system and complete 82-player ranking are available in the article linked in the first comment.
Who is too high? Who is too low? And who is missing from your Top 20?

⚡ How fast is FAST?
Sam Groth tops our list with a staggering 263.4 km/h (163.7 mph) serve recorded in 2012.
But comparing serve speeds across eras isn’t as simple as reading a radar gun. Equipment, tracking technology and validation standards have changed significantly over time, which is why we call these the fastest recorded serves, not official ATP records.
And the new generation is coming fast: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard hit 153 mph at Wimbledon in 2025, while Ben Shelton reached 151 mph in Washington in 2026.
Who has the most dangerous serve you’ve ever watched?

Racquet brands spend heavily to put their equipment in the hands of top players. But does seeing your favorite pro use a racquet influence what you buy?
In our ATP Top 100 snapshot, Wilson and Yonex lead with 24 players each, followed by HEAD (21) and Babolat (18). One player’s brand remains unconfirmed.
Does a pro’s choice influence yours? What brand and model do you play with? 🎾

We ranked the greatest tennis players of all time. 🎾
Not by Grand Slam titles alone.
The SportsEdTV GOAT Model compares players across eras using five factors:
🏆 Dominance and records
🎾 Opportunity-adjusted major titles
⏳ Career longevity
⚔️ Quality of competition
🌍 Cultural impact
The result? Novak Djokovic ranks No. 1, followed by Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
No GOAT ranking will end the debate. Ours is designed to make the debate more informed, with a transparent methodology that anyone can examine and challenge.

HOW TALL ARE THE BEST WOMEN IN TENNIS? 🎾
Pretty tall, actually.
The current WTA Top 10 range from 170 cm (5’7”) to 184 cm (just over 6’0”), and 9 of the 10 are at least 174 cm (about 5’8½”).
That is a tall group compared with the average woman. In the U.S., the average adult woman is about 5’3½” (161 cm), according to CDC data. So even the shortest player in this Top 10 is roughly 9 cm taller than the U.S. female average.
But height tells only part of the story.
Taller players can benefit from a higher serve contact point, longer levers and greater serving potential. Shorter players can counter with movement, balance, return quality and change of direction.
And look at the Top 10: 14 centimeters separate the shortest and tallest players, yet every one of them has reached the very top of the same sport.
Height can influence how you play tennis.
It doesn’t determine how good you can become.

DOES HEIGHT REALLY MATTER IN TENNIS? 🎾
Look at the range among the world’s best. You can compete at the very top at 6’0”, while others are dominating from 6’6”.
Height certainly matters, but the data show an interesting trade-off.
A study using 1,990 ATP players from the 2022 season found an average height of 184.1 cm (just over 6’0”). The authors identified 180–186 cm (5’11”–6’1”) as a particularly favorable range, while also noting that the reference values for an “ideal” range come from earlier Grand Slam research and should not be interpreted as a magic number.
At Wimbledon, the difference in playing style was striking. Among the men studied:
Under 185 cm: 180.9 km/h average first serve, 1.81 aces/set, 40.1% return points won
185–195 cm: 186.9 km/h, 3.41 aces/set, 39.4% return points won
Over 195 cm: 194.4 km/h, 4.21 aces/set, 34.6% return points won.
So taller players clearly gained something on serve, while the shorter group performed better on return.
The message for young players and parents is important:
There is no perfect tennis body.
Height can give you leverage, contact height and serving power. A smaller frame can coexist with excellent movement, returning and court coverage. Ultimately, technique, athleticism, anticipation and decision-making determine what you do with the body you have.
Don’t measure your potential with a tape measure.

Alexander Zverev just won the US Open, beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2. Every men’s major this year went to Europe, and the blue drought stretches to 23 years now, still nobody since Andy Roddick in 2003. Shelton gave New York a fight, first American man in a US Open final since Roddick, but couldn’t close it out.
Europe has now won every men’s Slam since Juan Martín del Potro’s 2009 US Open run, the last non-European champion. Seventeen straight years. Full breakdown of every title since 1970 on the board above.

A CHAMPION IN EVERY SENSE. 🏆🇩🇪
Alexander Zverev is the 2026 US Open Champion.
An extraordinary player, but his story goes far beyond tennis. Zverev has competed at the highest level while living with Type 1 diabetes, a condition he was diagnosed with as a child.
Today, he adds the US Open to his 2026 French Open title: two Grand Slams in one season.
Talent gets you far. Resilience, discipline and the refusal to accept limits can take you even further.
Congratulations, Alexander Zverev. Two-time major champion in 2026. 👏🎾
And perhaps the most powerful part of his story: every young athlete living with Type 1 diabetes can look at this and think, “Why not me?”
