Boca Raton, FL - August 28, 2025 - Florida’s coastline may one day host more than oysters, clams, fish and shrimp. Researchers at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and Florida Sea Grant are asking whether seaweed could be the state’s next big sustainable crop.
Snorkeling with Dive Flag
The effort, launched last year with a $250,000 grant from NOAA’s National Sea Grant Aquaculture Program, brings together scientists, industry partners and Extension agents to answer whether seaweed is a good fit for Florida. Boca Raton, FL - August 28, 2025 - In the spring of 2020, when much of the world came to a halt, a teenager in Miami found herself searching for connection and purpose. Karlee Malloy, then a high school sophomore, imagined a way to bring people together in the midst of isolation: a virtual run called the “QuarRUNtine.”
The idea was simple—invite friends, neighbors, and strangers alike to lace up their sneakers, move with intention, and channel their energy toward something bigger than themselves. That small idea became Race to Breakthrough, which today stands as the signature annual fundraiser for Breakthrough Miami, an education nonprofit that empowers students to achieve their full potential.
From Spark to Movement
The inaugural Race drew more than 300 participants from across the country and raised nearly $60,000—a remarkable feat for an event born in the depths of lockdown.
Now, nearly six years later, Race to Breakthrough has become a global tradition.
