Gas prices are up 27.4% over the past year.

That increase doesn’t stay at the pump. It takes money away from groceries, utilities and credit card payments.

Sometimes debt isn’t caused by overspending. The cost of normal life simply changed faster than the paycheck.

Three easy ways to save more this month:

1. Cancel one subscription you’re not using.
2. Compare or renegotiate one recurring bill.
3. Set up a small automatic transfer every payday.

You don’t have to change everything. Start with one expense and build from there.

You paid the credit card bill.

Then groceries, gas and one unexpected expense went right back on the card.

Now the balance is higher than it was last month.

That cycle is exhausting—and it usually doesn’t fix itself.

If this sounds familiar, it may be time to look at a different way forward. Greenwise Financial can help you understand your options.

Before deciding what to do about debt, take five minutes and write down these four numbers:

1. Total unsecured debt
2. Total monthly minimum payments
3. The amount you can reliably afford each month
4. The emergency cushion you need to avoid using the cards again

Then identify the real problem:

Is it a monthly cash-flow shortage? High interest? Rising balances? Delinquent accounts? Collection or legal pressure?

Different problems may require different solutions. Seeing the complete picture is a better first step than choosing an option based only on the monthly payment.

A lot of people are doing everything right and still watching their credit card balances grow.

Everyday costs are up. Interest rates are high. And minimum payments barely make a dent.

If this sounds familiar, don’t ignore it. Take a hard look at the numbers and understand your options before the situation gets worse.

Quick question: Do you know how much interest your credit cards charged you last month?

Most people know their balance and minimum payment. Far fewer know how much of that payment actually reduced what they owe.

Pull up your latest statement and find the line labeled “Interest Charged.” The number may surprise you.

If you’re comfortable sharing, comment with just one word:

Higher or lower than you expected?

Credit-card balances increased by $21 billion during the second quarter of 2026, reaching $1.263 trillion nationally.

The New York Fed also reported that the rate at which credit-card balances moved into serious delinquency remained elevated and was nearly unchanged from a year earlier.

The important lesson is not simply that Americans owe more.

It is that many households are carrying balances that have become increasingly difficult to reduce—especially when interest charges absorb a significant portion of each payment.

National statistics cannot tell you which option is right for your household. They can, however, serve as a reminder to review whether your balances are:

• Declining consistently
• Remaining roughly unchanged
• Increasing despite regular payments

Understanding the direction of your debt is often more useful than looking at the balance alone.
