WEEKEND OCEAN CHALLENGE #1: The Otter Float Test
Sea otters float on their backs all day because their fur traps a layer of air. Test it at home:
1. Fill a bowl with water.
2. Drop in a dry cotton ball. Watch it float.
3. Squeeze a second cotton ball underwater so the air escapes. Watch it sink.
4. Ask: what happens to an otter when oil or dirt squeezes the air out of its fur?
That is why otters groom for hours, and why oil spills are so dangerous for them.

How big are the biggest whales? Up to 100 feet long. That is longer than two school buses parked end to end. And these giants eat some of the smallest food in the sea: tiny krill and fish.

OCEAN NEWS: a humpback whale was spotted in eastern Australia and again in Brazil, 15,100 km apart. That is about 9,400 miles and the longest distance ever recorded between sightings of one humpback.
How did scientists know it was the same whale? The underside of every humpback's tail is unique, like a fingerprint. Researchers compared 19,283 tail photos taken between 1984 and 2025, many sent in by everyday whale watchers.

Happy World Maritime Day. Quick one to ask at dinner: why do boats measure speed in KNOTS?
Sailors used to toss a rope with evenly spaced knots off the back of the ship and count how many knots ran out in a set time. More knots, more speed. The name stuck for 400 years.

It's Sea Otter Awareness Week, and here is the fact that stops kids in their tracks: sea otters have NO blubber.
Whales have it. Seals have it. Otters? They survive cold Pacific water with fur alone: up to a million hairs per square inch, the densest fur of any animal on Earth. That is why they spend hours every day grooming. A dirty coat is a cold otter.
