At a time when divide feels inevitable and uncertainty has become our new normal, MINERVA RISING PRESS believes in the importance of coming together as a community and encouraging creation.

Please join us for our first official MINERVA WRITES Generative Writing Workshop - RISE ABOVE, virtually on Thursday, March 6th, at 7:00 pm EST.

Together, we will work through a series of prompts to help process the cacophony of discordance around us and rise above the noise.

All attendees will receive a free submission to The Keeping Room Magazine and resources to help maintain wellness during difficult times.

Like many, I am still reeling with so many emotions. Unsure about the future, sad, and angry. But I am inspired by the Nigerian writer Ehime Ora who says:

“You gotta resurrect the deep pain within you and give it a place to live that’s not within your body. Let it live in art. Let it live in writing. Let it live in music. Let it be devoured by building brighter connections. Your body is not a coffin for pain to be buried in. Put it somewhere else.”

Please join me and Executive Coach Trina Ramsey Thursday night for an hour of supportive and judgment-free writing as we give ourselves permission to let it all out on the page.

To register, comment below, and a Zoom link will be sent via Messenger to you inbox.

TODAY in 1901, Langston Hughes was born.

I wrote him a letter to honor his birthday and to celebrate the first day of Black History Month. Here's a little excerpt:

Dear Langston,

It’s February 1st, and I’m thinking of you. Today, you would be 123 years old. It’s not a particularly significant marker, but this day never passes without me feeling the need to celebrate your significance as a Black poet. Most years, I let the feeling pass without doing anything. But this year, it feels important to take the time to acknowledge you and the effect your poetry has had on my life.

I was never a fan of poetry because, in grade school, it felt like a foreign language I didn’t understand. I couldn’t. . . (Read more at https://booksbywomen.org/kimberly-garrett-brown-letter-to-langston-hughes/ )

Thank you WomenWriters,Women'sBooks for sharing this with your readers.

I am so excited to announce that CORA'S KITCHEN was selected for the 2022 Story Circle Network Sarton Women's Book Award for Historical Fiction.

The Sarton Award is named in honor of May Saton, who is remembered for her outstanding contributions to women's literature as a memoirist, novelist, and poet. Sarton's memoirs, novels, and nonfiction books are distinguished by the compelling ways they honor the lives of women and girls.

It is such a great honor to be selected by the Story Circle Network. Their mission to empower women to tell their stories, discover their identities through their stories, and choose to be the authors of their own lives is close to my heart.

I am truly grateful.

Cora’s Kitchen Dishes Hard Truths about Racism, Classism and the Limits of Friendship 11/07/2022

"All told, Cora’s Kitchen is a masterful look at the many ways in which racism, classism and misogyny overlap and oppress."

Honored to have been reviewed by The Indypendent!

Cora’s Kitchen Dishes Hard Truths about Racism, Classism and the Limits of Friendship A talented young black writer gets the opportunity of a lifetime, but it’s fraught with peril.

I had a great time talking to G.P. Gottlieb! Take a listen to our conversation.😊

It’s 1928, and Cora James is immersed in raising her kids, being a good wife, and her work at the 135th Street Library in Harlem. A correspondence with the young Langston Hughes and a brief stint replacing her cousin in the kitchen of a rich white family give Cora the fortitude to plunge ahead with her dream of being a writer. This is a charming epistolary novel (by Kimberly Garrett Brown) is about the struggle of an educated Black woman in early 20th century American society. https://newbooksnetwork.com/coras-kitchen
