Sargassum was named by Portuguese sailors upon discovering it in the Sargasso Sea. They named the gulfweed after the wooly rose that grew in their water wells at home. ⁣

Ancient Chinese medicine saw this plant cultivated and cleaned to use as various herbal remedies. It was powdered in order to combine it with warm water to drink as a tea. ⁣

Today you’ll find large amounts of Sargassum along the southern FL mainland and the FL Keys.
