A client came in a few weeks ago that I have been seeing for several years. She comes monthly like clockwork. She is one that is blessed with nearly flawless skin. She always has a completely smooth, even, skin tone and texture - with a natural light honey color hue. Simply beautiful..
When she walked in at her last visit, I was shocked to see a wound on her cheek. Noticeably visible. Of course I asked what happened but she couldn’t be completely sure?
(I love this part of my job because here is where I begin the investigative interrogation while ultimately allowing any details to surface.) Together we’ll figure out what she did.
I take pride in my thorough skin assessments with very little getting past me…
She mentioned that something new had appeared on her face/cheek out of nowhere? She also mentioned that she had attempted to self-treat the new mark with a microneedle patch. However, she couldn’t explain the wound?
Upon closer examination of the entire wound, it became apparent rather quickly what had happened…
* She did not know ‘what’ she was treating
* She did not know exactly what targeted or aggressive ingredients were on the patch
^ She did not know how the patch would affect the surrounding skin
As it turns out, the mark that formed on her face is called seborrheic keratosis. These are very, very common. They tend to begin showing up in what appears to be overnight on persons approximately 50 and over. Typically when you find one, others will slowly follow. They can be flesh colored, brown, dark brown or even black. Sometimes they can overlap. Some people have more than one color. They can be found on fair skin to skin of color.
Again, her mistake was not knowing what she was treating because if she did she would know that a simple patch of any kind was not going to treat or cause removal of the SK mark.
Instead, the circular microneedle patch that she applied to the small mark inadvertently affected ALL the healthy skin beneath the patch. So much so that the it caused inflammation and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation….in a circular shape, around the SK mark, which was not even affected at all.
At this point we go from a small mark to a noticeably visible wound the size and shape of a dime.
I now know what I’m working with at this point and begin looking for any new formations…
I found three more small flesh colored marks in her hairline.
Most of us can probably look at our parents to determine whether or not SK marks are likely. There is a genetic component.
And, because they are benign and harmless, dermatologists do not bother them.
There are likely skin resurfacing treatments or laser treatments that may remove them however, the likelihood of them being replaced is great and there is no prevention of their formation.
I also want to raise awareness surrounding these patches. There are hydrocolloid, microneedle and pimple patches out there. Always know what you’re treating and what ingredients are being delivered onto your skin from the patch. So much can go wrong.

Excitement is in the air! The Blue Ash Towne Square Friday concerts are back and kicking off tomorrow evening. Here is the lineup and as you can see from the photos, The Park Pour is preparing, as well.
Typically, fans begin bringing their lawn chairs earlier in the day on Friday - then return to them that evening. I watch it all outside my floor to ceiling window every summer…
Definitely something fun to enjoy!!

Layering your skin care products is as easy as eating sushi!!
And remember - there’s no need to flood the skin with too much product. Less is more so a thin layer of each will do nicely.
Stay sun safe, protected and hydrated!

I would like to take the time to welcome home my snowbirds who have been away for several months during the winter. It has been wonderful seeing you again from all parts Florida, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico headed to London then Sicily, and even a gentleman client from Spain.
Some of you have protected, taken great care of your skin and it shows. Keep up the great work!
Others have kept me busy restoring, repairing and rejuvenating their skin. But, I’m here for it!
We apologize for the cooler temperatures that you’ve returned to. We’re sorry that a sweater is necessary. We can’t explain it either…
In the meantime, many that have been here all winter can’t wait to leave the area for vacations to much warmer temperatures.
I’ll be here for you too when you return to the tristate. In the meantime stay sun safe, hydrated and protected,

By now most everyone is wearing SPF. But, have you checked the active ingredients in your SPF?
This is not about avoiding SPF... it's about choosing wisely. For you and your family.
Most people assume that SPF just sits or stays on the surface of the skin. Ah, but human studies/clinical trials show that some common chemical UV filters are indeed systematically absorbed into the skin after normal use.
Mineral sunscreens using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide DO sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. They also show minimal systemic absorption and provide broad spectrum protection. This is what you want from your SPF choice.
So, remember these tips when you're out looking to replace your old SPF. Check the ingredients carefully. You may also want to check the ingredients of the SPF that you've already been using, as well.
And, as I've mentioned in past posts, be sure to discard old SPF regularly and do not keep your SPF in your car glove compartment. Heat degrades the efficacy, rendering the SPF useless.

It’s amazing how starting early and being consistent with wearing SPF can push the clock back…

It all begins with Advanced Dermaplane.
The removal of soft vellus facial hairs and the coarser terminal facial hairs. In addition to the removal of dry, uneven surface cellular debris accumulation.
Remember, as the skin is sun kissed from outdoor activities, it becomes darker, while facial hair can become lighter and more pronounced in contrast.
Advanced Dermaplane leaves the skin refreshed, smooth and glowing!
*Don't attend that graduation, picnic, wedding, reunion or vacation without it!
