Trace silicone oil on a surface can be hard to see, but it can still interfere with adhesion, create failures and leave teams trying to figure out where the problem started.

This article from Block Engineering looks at how QCL hyperspectral imaging can detect and map silicone oil contamination without contacting the surface.

That matters because silicone oil is not always “bad.” In some processes, it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. In others, leftover residue can become a quality control problem.

Biocide-free sounds like the easy sustainability answer. This article from Jotun Group looks at why marine biofouling is more complicated than that.

When hull fouling is not controlled well, vessels can use more fuel, emit more CO₂ and move invasive species between waters.

The article covers the role of copper oxide, alternative biocides, biocide-free coatings and the regulatory pressure building around antifouling systems.

One number worth noting: a 2024 DNV Maritime Advisory technical evaluation verified 11.1 million tons of CO₂ avoided in 2024 for Jotun-coated vessels.

Automotive coatings are being asked to keep up with a very different industry than the one they helped shape 50 years ago.

At this year’s DSCT Focus Conference, PCI covered a 50th anniversary panel with voices from Ford, General Motors, PPG, and Axalta, as well as John McElroy’s keynote. Her recap looks at what the last 50 years of automotive coatings innovation can tell us about the next 50.

A 100-year-old pigment process still has something to teach today’s coatings industry. In 1926, Dr. Julius Laux looked at iron oxide from aniline production and saw something others did not. Not waste; Pigment potential. That early idea became the LAUX process, which LANXESS still uses in Germany to produce iron oxide pigments.

In this article, Renata Rodrigues of LANXESS explains how that history connects to today’s sustainability work, including product-specific carbon footprint data, Environmental Product Declarations and work with Evonik on CO₂-reduced pigment concentrates.

One standout result: joint studies showed pigment concentrates with a product carbon footprint 40% lower than standard formulations.
