Running a business rooted in community work isnโt always easyโbut itโs always worth it.
There was a moment in the field that stuck with me. We were out doing outreach, and someone said, And that hit. Because it wasnโt just about researchโit was about trust.
That moment reinforced something I carry into every project:
This work isnโt just about collecting data. And itโs also about accountability.
If communities are willing to share their experiences, Too often, people participate in studies, focus groups, and assessments and never see the findings or outcomes. That creates disconnect and reinforces mistrust.
At Community Tracking Services, we believe data collection should be a two-way exchangeโnot a one-time extraction. Thatโs what โ๐ง๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ต ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ด๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ต๐ดโ really means to us.

Fun fact about me: I once worked as a Correctional Officer โ and it shaped the way I show up in community research today.
That chapter of my life taught me the importance of discipline, listening, and seeing people beyond their circumstances. Every interaction reminded me that everyone has a story worth hearing.
Now, as a qualitative researcher, I carry those lessons with me every single day. Whether Iโm sitting down for an interview or facilitating a focus group, I approach people with respect, patience, and an open mind โ because trust and understanding are the foundation of real data.
Itโs not just about collecting information. Itโs about building relationships, amplifying voices, and making sure communities feel seen and valued.
๐ฌIโm curious โWhat was an unexpected job or experience youโve had that has completely shaped the way you work today? Drop it in the comments โ Iโd love to hear your journey!

Mental health conversations are important but real impact happens when communities are actually heard, supported, and invested in.
Because mental health isnโt just personalโitโs shaped by where we live, what weโve experienced, how weโre resourced, and whether systems actually listen.
Over the past year, weโve been doing the work behind the awareness:
-Listening to communities to understand how stigma and misinformation impact help-seeking
-Supporting violence prevention efforts rooted in trauma-informed care
-Bringing community-led insights into public health strategy
-Partnering across Birmingham to center lived experienceโnot just statistics
And one thing continues to guide us:
-We donโt call communities โhard to reach.โ
-We ask better questions.
-Who hasnโt been heard?
-Who hasnโt been invested in?
-Who hasnโt been prioritized?
Mental health equity takes more than campaigns.
It takes trust. Presence. Consistency.
This month, weโre recommitting to that workโ
listening deeply, collecting responsibly, and turning community voice into action.
Because data tells us what is happening.
Community tells us why.
If this resonates, share it. Someone in your network needs this perspective.

We gave it everythingโand Iโm so grateful.
Thank you to every single person who voted, donated, shared, texted a friend, or checked in along the way during the Entrepreneur of Impact competition. Your support meant more than you know.
While I didnโt move forward to the next round, this experience reminded me just how powerful community really is. To see people show up, every single day, without hesitationโฆ thatโs something Iโll never take for granted.
This journey was never just about a titleโit was about visibility, impact, and the work weโre building together.
And trust meโweโre just getting started.
Thank you for being part of this with me.

Too often, research is designed about communities, not with them. But communities hold deep knowledgeโknowledge that can shape more effective, relevant, and sustainable public health solutions.โ
โ
Hereโs how we honor community wisdom in research:โ
โ
Start with listening sessions, not surveysโ
๐น Invite community leaders to co-design toolsโ
Use storytelling as data, not just numbersโ
Share findings back with the communityโin real language, not jargonโ
โ
Respecting lived experience isnโt just the right thing to do. It leads to better researchโand better outcomes.โ
โ
Letโs shift the power dynamics in public health research.โ

Thatโs what my parents said when the feds knocked at our door with a warrant and my grandparents arrived to take us.โ

Iโve never forgotten that feeling.โ

Itโs my why behind Community Tracking Servicesโmaking sure our voices are heard and part of the decisions that impact us.โ
