Running a business rooted in community work isnโ€™t always easyโ€”but itโ€™s always worth it.

There was a moment in the field that stuck with me. We were out doing outreach, and someone said, โ€ And that hit. Because it wasnโ€™t just about researchโ€”it was about trust.

That moment reinforced something I carry into every project:
This work isnโ€™t just about collecting data. And itโ€™s also about accountability.

If communities are willing to share their experiences, Too often, people participate in studies, focus groups, and assessments and never see the findings or outcomes. That creates disconnect and reinforces mistrust.

At Community Tracking Services, we believe data collection should be a two-way exchangeโ€”not a one-time extraction. Thatโ€™s what โ€œ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ดโ€ really means to us.

Fun fact about me: I once worked as a Correctional Officer โ€” and it shaped the way I show up in community research today.

That chapter of my life taught me the importance of discipline, listening, and seeing people beyond their circumstances. Every interaction reminded me that everyone has a story worth hearing.

Now, as a qualitative researcher, I carry those lessons with me every single day. Whether Iโ€™m sitting down for an interview or facilitating a focus group, I approach people with respect, patience, and an open mind โ€” because trust and understanding are the foundation of real data.

Itโ€™s not just about collecting information. Itโ€™s about building relationships, amplifying voices, and making sure communities feel seen and valued.

๐Ÿ’ฌIโ€™m curious โ€”What was an unexpected job or experience youโ€™ve had that has completely shaped the way you work today? Drop it in the comments โ€” Iโ€™d love to hear your journey!

Mental health conversations are important but real impact happens when communities are actually heard, supported, and invested in.

Because mental health isnโ€™t just personalโ€”itโ€™s shaped by where we live, what weโ€™ve experienced, how weโ€™re resourced, and whether systems actually listen.

Over the past year, weโ€™ve been doing the work behind the awareness:
-Listening to communities to understand how stigma and misinformation impact help-seeking
-Supporting violence prevention efforts rooted in trauma-informed care
-Bringing community-led insights into public health strategy
-Partnering across Birmingham to center lived experienceโ€”not just statistics

And one thing continues to guide us:
-We donโ€™t call communities โ€œhard to reach.โ€
-We ask better questions.
-Who hasnโ€™t been heard?
-Who hasnโ€™t been invested in?
-Who hasnโ€™t been prioritized?

Mental health equity takes more than campaigns.

It takes trust. Presence. Consistency.

This month, weโ€™re recommitting to that workโ€”

listening deeply, collecting responsibly, and turning community voice into action.

Because data tells us what is happening.

Community tells us why.

If this resonates, share it. Someone in your network needs this perspective.

We gave it everythingโ€”and Iโ€™m so grateful.

Thank you to every single person who voted, donated, shared, texted a friend, or checked in along the way during the Entrepreneur of Impact competition. Your support meant more than you know.

While I didnโ€™t move forward to the next round, this experience reminded me just how powerful community really is. To see people show up, every single day, without hesitationโ€ฆ thatโ€™s something Iโ€™ll never take for granted.

This journey was never just about a titleโ€”it was about visibility, impact, and the work weโ€™re building together.

And trust meโ€”weโ€™re just getting started.

Thank you for being part of this with me.

Too often, research is designed about communities, not with them. But communities hold deep knowledgeโ€”knowledge that can shape more effective, relevant, and sustainable public health solutions.โ
โ
Hereโ€™s how we honor community wisdom in research:โ
โ
๐Ÿ”น Start with listening sessions, not surveysโ
๐Ÿ”น Invite community leaders to co-design toolsโ
๐Ÿ”น Use storytelling as data, not just numbersโ
๐Ÿ”น Share findings back with the communityโ€”in real language, not jargonโ
โ
Respecting lived experience isnโ€™t just the right thing to do. It leads to better researchโ€”and better outcomes.โ
โ
Letโ€™s shift the power dynamics in public health research.โ

Iโ€™m still in this!โ
โ
I placed 2nd in my group finals, which means Iโ€™ve officially made it to the Wildcard Round โ€” and Iโ€™ve got one more shot to make it to the Quarterfinals.โ
โ
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ May 1 โ€“ May 3โ
โ
-Votes have been resetโ
-Only 1 person from each group advancesโ
โ
This is a quick round, so every single vote really counts.โ
โ
If youโ€™ve been voting, sharing, encouraging me โ€” thank you. I donโ€™t take any of it lightly. Truly.โ

If you can, keep showing up with me these next couple of days:โ

โ€œTomorrow, I may not be at the bus stop to pick you up.
โ
Thatโ€™s what my parents said when the feds knocked at our door with a warrant and my grandparents arrived to take us.โ
โ
Iโ€™ve never forgotten that feeling.โ
โ
Itโ€™s my why behind Community Tracking Servicesโ€”making sure our voices are heard and part of the decisions that impact us.โ
โ
Now, I want to go further. If I win $25,000, Iโ€™ll create a data literacy program so communities can understand, question, and use their data to advocate for themselves.โ

Weโ€™ve literally been โ€œfeet in the streetsโ€ lately with all the community events CTS has been attending.โ
โ
Grateful to have been in the room for the Forge AHEAD Scholars & Community Partners Showcase with Carol Agomo. From the Scholars Development Workshop to the Community & Research Showcase and evening reception, it was a full day connecting with folks across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi who are all doing important work.โ
โ
What I always come back toโ€”this work is better when itโ€™s done with community.โ
โ
If you believe in that kind of impact, Iโ€™d appreciate your support ๐Ÿ’›โ
