In December 1983, a group of volunteers at First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham noticed an urgent need in their community, women were seeking refuge at their church, sleeping in the courtyard and on the church’s stairs. Seeing this, they transformed the church basement into a safe place that marked the beginning of what is now First Light. 🤝

Today, First Light offers support for homeless women in Birmingham and beyond. Our shelter provides not just a place to stay, but also resources that are vital in the lives of the women who live with us: case management, access to housing programs, medical and substance abuse screenings, group counseling, and more. 💛

We believe in more than just temporary solutions, our residents are encouraged to better themselves and grow while they are in our care. Through regular meetings with case managers, participation in counseling, and learning practical skills through participating in chores around the facility, each resident has the chance to make lasting change in their own lives. 🙌

We are committed to ending homelessness in our community, and we need your help to sustain our mission.

Lever for Change announced this week the awardees for the – and we’re one of them!
We’re excited to share that we’ve received a $1 million gift from the Yield Giving Open Call! The – managed by LeverforChange – focused on elevating organizations working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States – and our organization does just that through providing services to homeless women and women with children and families in the Birmingham area. Our project was selected from among 6,353 applications from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico after a process of multiple levels of review, feedback, and diligence involving peer applicants and an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause.
First Light is pleased to be a recipient of this grant award. For over 40 years, First Light has provided services to homeless women and women with children. These funds will have a tremendous impact on our services and helping people get to the next best place in their lives. We are grateful to the Yield Giving committee for recognizing the work we do every day to help those experiencing homelessness.

Earthborn Studios, Inc. will be hosting its annual Blue Light Special Art Show and its 'Empty Bowls' fundraiser supporting First Light this weekend. The show will be held Saturday, December 9th from 9am-4pm and Sunday, December 10th from 11am-4pm.
