After a storm, visible damage like downed limbs and split trunks is evident. However, hidden issues can be more dangerous: root heave, concealed trunk cracks, and hanging branches ("widow makers") pose risks of injury and property damage later on.

ACE conducts thorough post-storm evaluations in Central Alabama, checking for ground disturbance, trunk integrity, and active hazards. If a tree threatens a structure, ACE's 24/7 emergency response serves Birmingham and nearby areas.

Anyone can call themselves a tree service. The ISA Certified Arborist credential is what separates companies that follow science-based standards from those that figure it out as they go. At ACE, that credential isn't just a marketing detail. It's the foundation of how every job is assessed and executed.

The ISA Certified Arborist exam covers tree biology, soil science, pruning standards, tree risk assessment, plant health care, and safe work practices. Earning it requires passing a rigorous exam and documenting hands-on arboricultural experience. Keeping it requires ongoing continuing education, because tree science evolves and standards get updated. It's not a one-time certification that sits in a frame on the wall.

What does that mean in practice for a homeowner in Birmingham? It means the person assessing your trees is using current, evidence-based methods rather than what "looks about right." It means pruning cuts are made correctly, reducing the chance of decay entry. It means a hazard assessment follows a documented methodology, not just a walk-around guess. And it means treatment recommendations are based on diagnosis, not upselling.

That standard runs through every job ACE takes on, from a small pruning visit to a full Plant Health Care program. When you hire a crew, how much do you actually know about their credentials before they show up? It's worth asking the right questions.

Not every structurally compromised tree needs removal. Often, cabling or bracing is a better solution, reinforcing weak points and reducing failure risk. An ISA Certified Arborist can identify which trees are good candidates.

Common candidates include trees with co-dominant stems, included bark, or heavy lateral limbs. Properly installed cables limit movement during wind and relieve stress on weak attachments. Bracing rods support existing cracks.

Cabling and bracing must follow ISA standards for safety and longevity. Neglecting these can turn a tree into a liability. If you have concerns about a large tree on your property, understanding structural support options is essential.

ACE evaluates these situations in full hazard assessments. Learn more at acetreebham.com. Is there a large tree on your property that leans or has a split trunk? Have you had it evaluated by a certified arborist?

If you have magnolia trees on your property, now is a good time to take a close look at the branches. Magnolia scale is one of the more damaging ornamental pests in Alabama, and summer is when infestations become most visible and most problematic. Catching it early makes a real difference in what treatment looks like.

The signs to watch for: white or pinkish waxy bumps along the branches, a sticky, syrupy residue dripping from the tree (called honeydew), and a dark sooty mold forming on the leaves or surfaces below the canopy. That mold is actually a secondary fungus feeding on the honeydew. By the time you see heavy mold buildup, the infestation is usually well established.

Magnolia scale spreads easily from tree to tree through crawlers, the mobile early-stage insects that travel on birds, wind, and equipment. A single untreated tree can become a source for surrounding plants. ACE's Integrated Pest Management approach looks at the full picture: identifying the life stage, timing treatment appropriately, and selecting methods that target the pest without unnecessary collateral impact.

If you've noticed anything unusual on your magnolias this season, that's worth a professional look before the infestation gets ahead of you. Questions? Reach out at acetreebham.com. Do you have magnolia trees on your property? Have you noticed any unusual buildup on the branches or a sticky film on surfaces below?

Most tree problems don't appear overnight. Often, there's an issue underground or within the bark that a trained arborist can catch early. That's the essence of Plant Health Care (PHC), setting ACE apart from companies that only respond to removal needs.

PHC is an ongoing program involving property inspections, soil analysis, deep root fertilization, integrated pest management, and regular disease monitoring. The goal is to maintain trees' health to avoid removal discussions. A proactive approach typically costs less than reactive emergency work and ensures your trees thrive.

As an ISA Certified Arborist, ACE takes a comprehensive approach, assessing soil health, tree nutrition, pest presence, and structural integrity. This thorough evaluation differentiates PHC from one-time treatments or store-bought solutions.

After a tree comes down, the stump that's left behind is easy to ignore. It's out of the way, it's not moving, and dealing with it feels like a project to get to eventually. But stumps left in place cause real ongoing problems, and the longer they sit, the more complicated those problems become.

A decaying stump is a fungal disease entry point. Wood-rot fungi establish themselves quickly in dead wood and can spread through shared root systems to neighboring trees that are still alive and healthy. The decaying root mass also creates ideal habitat for termites and carpenter ants, which become a concern as they work their way closer to the foundation or the home. Many tree species push new growth from the root system for years after the main trunk is gone — a stump that isn't ground out can mean years of managing sprouts. And on a practical level, the surface roots and decaying wood create soil soft spots, can damage lawn equipment, and are a genuine tripping hazard.

Professional stump grinding removes the stump below the surface and grinds the root flare, leaving behind wood chips that can be worked into the soil as mulch or hauled away with complete cleanup. ACE handles the full process: grinding, cleanup, and site restoration. We serve the greater Birmingham area and can often schedule stump grinding as a standalone service within a day or two.

Is there a stump on your property you've been putting off? What's been the main reason it hasn't gotten taken care of yet?

At a lot of tree service companies, the process works like this: an estimator comes out, takes a look, writes up a quote, and hands it off to a crew. The person who assessed your trees and sold you the job isn't the person doing the work. The ISA credentials on the website may belong to someone who isn't involved in your specific job at all.

ACE Tree Service works differently. The ISA Certified Arborist (license SO-6393A) and the business owner are the same person. That means the same person who evaluates your trees, makes the diagnosis, and recommends a course of action is also the person whose name and reputation are on every job ACE completes. The certified knowledge and the business accountability aren't separated across two different roles — they're in the same hands.

This matters most on complex jobs: a large removal in a tight yard, a preservation decision where removal isn't the only option, or an assessment where the difference between "this tree is fine" and "this tree needs to come down" has real consequences. In those situations, you want the person making the call to have both the credentials to back it up and the accountability to stand behind it.

When you've had tree work done in the past, did you ever feel like the person who assessed the job was different from the person who actually did the work? How did that affect your confidence in the outcome?

Most homeowners don't know this is even a thing — but lightning protection for trees is a real, professionally installed system that can save a valuable specimen tree from a direct strike.

Here's how it works: a copper conductor cable is run from near the top of the tree down through the canopy and along the trunk to a grounding rod driven into the soil at the base. When lightning strikes, the system provides a preferred, low-resistance path for the current to travel into the ground, bypassing the tree's living tissue. The result is that strikes that would otherwise split, char, or kill the tree entirely often cause minimal damage. It doesn't prevent lightning from hitting the tree, but it dramatically changes what happens when it does.

The cases where lightning protection makes the most sense: large, mature oaks or other specimen trees growing close to the house where a strike could cause both tree damage and structural damage to the home. Historic or irreplaceable trees with significant value on a property. Trees used as significant landscape features where replacement would take decades. ACE Tree Service installs these systems as part of our broader tree preservation services, including cabling, bracing, and micro-injection.

Do you have a large oak or specimen tree in your yard that's close enough to the house that a strike would concern you? What's the tree, and how long has it been there?

As June temperatures climb across the Birmingham area, trees start showing stress in ways that are easy to mistake for disease or pest damage. Knowing the difference matters, because the response is completely different.

Heat and drought stress has specific visual signatures: leaves that curl inward or cup along the edges, early leaf drop before fall, wilting that doesn't improve overnight, and bark that looks dry or begins to crack on younger trees. Newly planted or recently transplanted trees are the most vulnerable, but established trees under persistent heat pressure can show these symptoms too. The problem with stress damage is what comes next: a tree weakened by heat becomes significantly more susceptible to secondary problems like fungal disease, wood-boring insects, and root rot, particularly after a wet stretch follows a dry one.

Catching heat stress early gives you options. Appropriate mulching, irrigation management, and in some cases targeted pruning to reduce canopy load can help a stressed tree recover before permanent damage sets in. An ISA Certified Arborist can assess whether what you're seeing is stress, disease, pests, or some combination, and advise on the right response before the problem compounds.

As the summer heat ramps up, which trees on your property have you been watching? Are there any showing signs you've been unsure about?
