Space One Eleven

Our campers in Portfolio Development have the opportunity to strengthen their portfolios with guidance from their teaching artist Daisie Hoitsma Young, and receive portfolio reviews from Darius Hill, Chair of the Visual Arts Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

These dedicated young artists have been creating still life drawings and practicing fundamental skills that fine art programs look for in prospective students.

Our Young Artists in Clay Camp are back at it this week! The work that they finished in the first week of camp was fired over the break, so now its ready for glaze! In addition to finishing their pieces from week one, some of our artists are taking the time to get more practice throwing on the wheel.

Our young artists in Clay Camp had the opportunity to practice throwing on the wheel and hand-building this week. Their creations are drying now, and will be fired in our kilns over the next week so they'll be ready to glaze when the artists return for their next week of camp!

Our digital artists learn a wide variety of computer skills and art processes over their week at camp with Nic Tisdale. They work on everything from photo editing and digital illustration to 3D modeling and web design.

We have two seats open in our Mural Camp (July 15 - July 19) taught by Darius Hill, but registration won't be open much longer!

This mural making camp will delve into painting on a “next level.” Students will learn how to up-scale imagery to produce a giant-sized work. Students will express themselves creatively, while also learning how to work on a team project.

Last week, the young artists in our Photography Camps worked in the studio to create photo prints and cyanotypes, and also took to the streets on their daily photo walks to practice principles of photography and image composition.
You'll be able to see their photographs in the student exhibition at the end of Summer Camps!

Our young artists in Printmaking have been making relief prints on linoleum blocks. By carving their imaged into linoleum blocks, the artists are able to make detailed, reproducible work and even print multicolored artwork with multiple passes through the press.

Last week was our final week with young artists in grades 2-5 for the summer. They learned core artistic skills and created varied works ranging from stop motion animation to still life paintings and portraits!
While we're sad to see our elementary artists go, we're so excited to be kicking off our camps for grades 6-12 this week with Photography, Digital Art, and Printmaking!

We're having a great second week of art camps. Everyone is having fun and learning a lot!

Students and faculty of ASFA came by to hear ASFA alum Erin LeAnn Mitchell talk about her process and her work in "My Yoke is Easy and My Burden is Light." It was great to have so many young artists engaging with the exhibition, which will be up until May 24.

Space One Eleven will be hosting artist talks by Erin LeAnn Mitchel and E L Chisolm this Thursday! The artists are currently showing work at Space One Eleven in the joint exhibition "My Yoke is easy and My Burden is Light."

Its a wonderful time to try something new at Space One Eleven!

You still have a couple of days to register for Intro to Drawing with David West! This four-week course will teach the fundamentals of observational drawing and help students build skills and confidence with the medium.

We will also have a workshop on Plein Air Pastels with Timothy Joe coming up on Thursday, May 9. Get out and enjoy the Spring weather as you work outdoors in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens!

Both Classes are open to artists aged 16+ of any skill level and experience. More information can be found on our website at the link below:
