Space One Eleven (SOE) is a visual arts organization founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 1986. SOE's mission is to provide professional opportunities for artists, create a forum for public understanding of contemporary art, and offer arts education to area youth.

Last week we wrapped up two weeks of camps for grades 2-5. This week we are kicking off our camps for grades 6-12 with Papier-Mâché, Drawing, and Sculpture: Bending Wood!

In this camp, the design challenge for rising 9th through 12th-graders will be to develop several design solutions based on the program generated from the studio, working within or responding to the provided architectural armature. We will get to explore different concepts related to your scheme looking at environmental response, context, scale, proportion, and materiality.

This camp will be taught by Birmingham architects Kris Nikolich and Andrew C. Bryant of Design Initiative.

In this wildly popular workshop turned week-long camp, Sarah Bell will teach rising 6th through 12th grade students will explore how to forage, process, and use natural materials to create 3D forms. We will begin by using vines, bark, and split wood to weave functional or sculptural basketry vessels and add interest and detail using material dyed from flowers, leaves, and roots.

One of our most requested camps based on last summer's camper surveys, this camp will introduce rising 6th through 12th-grade artists to crochet as an artistic tool. Young artists will learn foundational techniques such as single crochet, shaping and color changing. With these skills and some creative problem-solving, artists will translate a color drawing into a yarn-based image.

In this camp for rising 9th - 12th graders, young artists will learn some of the same sculptural techniques that teaching artist Tanner Young used to create the sculptures recently on display in Space One Eleven's galleries, in his exhibition, "see, saw, sawn."

Young artists will explore making bent wood sculpture through the method of hot pipe bending. Different methods of fabrication and construction will be utilized in the production of these sculptures.

Economical, Ecological, Accessible

During this exciting new camp rising 6th through 12th-grade students will explore their creativity through the design and construction of papier-mâché sculptures. Young artists will spend the week developing their creative concepts, building armatures, applying papier-mâché, and finally bringing their creations to life by painting their handmade sculptures.
