Congratulations to our MS-4 class on their matches! Scroll through to see all the fantastic places they’ve matched. We could not be prouder!

In the final week of Black History Month for our Pillars of Progress series, we celebrate the incredible Dr. Charles Richard Drew, the “father of blood banking”! 💉

Dr. Drew revolutionized blood storage with his long-term plasma technique which standardized ways of collecting, testing, preserving and handling blood. As the first director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank, he introduced bloodmobiles, saving countless lives during World War II with the Blood for Britain project and transforming blood donation.

But Dr. Drew’s passion didn’t stop at blood banking. As a surgery department chairman at Freedmen’s Hospital (now Howard University Hospital), he mentored young African-American surgeons, striving to break barriers in medicine.

Despite facing racial discrimination, Dr. Drew’s dedication to equality and justice in healthcare never wavered. His legacy as a pioneer and advocate for change continues to inspire us all.

As we close Black History Month, let’s honor Dr. Drew’s remarkable contributions. And don’t worry, our series continues with more inspiring stories to come! Stay tuned! 🎉

In week 3 of our Pillars of Progress series, we’re celebrating the incredible Dr. Jane Cooke Wright, a trailblazer in oncology! 🌟 Her story is rooted in a legacy of medical excellence. Her grandfather overcame slavery to earn his MD, her step-grandfather was Yale Medical College’s first African American graduate in 1897, and her father was one of the first African Americans to graduate from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Wright’s groundbreaking work with her father advanced cancer treatment by bringing chemotherapeutics from the realm of experimental to standard of care 💉. Their efforts were instrumental in proving the effectiveness of methotrexate in treating breast cancer and other solid tumors, and they were pioneers in researching the enhanced efficacy of the sequential administration of chemotherapeutic drugs 💊. Dr. Wright’s innovative approach of using patient tumor biopsies for drug testing also laid the groundwork for personalized medicine.

As the only woman and African American among the founding members of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), she played a vital role in shaping the field of clinical oncology. Dr. Wright’s contributions to cancer chemotherapy research have revolutionized medicine and continue to impact lives today 🌍.

Let’s honor Dr. Wright as a remarkable pillar of progress whose legacy continues to inspire! ✨

Follow us today to see a day in the life of MS-2,

Claire hails from the great state of Illinois and enjoys hanging with friends, baking, and knitting. Her research interests are in neurodegenerative diseases.

This week in our Pillars of Progress series, we honor a true trailblazer in medicine, Dr. Leonidas Harris Berry 🎉
His pioneering work transformed the treatment of digestive diseases, particularly in individuals with severe alcohol addiction, and he became the first African American to present his research at the American Medical Association in 1941 (before its desegregation in 1968).

Dr. Berry’s career was a litany of ‘firsts’ as he continued to break racial barriers, including being the first African American staff physician at Michael Reese Hospital in 1946. Despite facing systemic challenges, he never wavered in his commitment to medicine and equality.

His dedication to service is exemplified by the founding of the Flying Black Medics ✈️, an initiative that delivered care to communities most in need. Dr. Berry’s legacy is a testament to his unwavering dedication to advancing healthcare and promoting equity within the field.

🌟Join us in celebrating Dr. Berry, a pillar of progress whose impact resonates to this day.🌟
