Science Café on the Coast will host a presentation “Underwater Forest” on Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 pm at Biloxi Public Library. Journey beneath the waves to explore one of the Gulf Coast’s most remarkable discoveries—a prehistoric bald cypress forest located 13 kilometers offshore of Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico. Preserved beneath the seafloor for tens of thousands of years and likely exposed by a hurricane, these ancient trees offer a rare glimpse into a time when sea levels were more than 20 meters lower than they are today. Join LSU’s Dr. Kristine DeLong, with expertise in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology, as she discusses the investigation of this submerged forest, what it reveals about the last glacial interval (70,000–50,000 years ago), and how scientists use this extraordinary site to better understand past environments and changing coastlines.
This event offers those with minimal background in science the chance to meet and discuss scientific issues in a relaxed social setting.
Admission is free and open to the public, with light refreshments available.
Biloxi Library is located at 580 Howard Avenue, Biloxi, MS 39530.
