HOT SUNDAY WITH VERY HIGH TIDES CAUSING A LITTLE COASTAL FLOOD/SPLASHOVER: 90F, STORMY OVERNIGHT; COOLER WEEK AHEAD WITH POSSIBLE SEVERE STORMS ON THURSDAY?

Simulated radar for 4AM Monday morning seen below.

First, we have a warm/hot Sunday head with temperatures cracking 90F. Dew points start in the 50s (dry) but creep into the 60s (more humid) by later tonight. Also, due to very high tides, coastal roads that are prone to splashover and flooding, may see some action around 11AM and 11PM high tides.

As you see below, our dry streak is coming to an end pre-dawn Monday morning...where some showers and embedded thunderstorms will cross the region. Not impossible for a severe storm along the Cape and Islands.

We cool down to the upper 70s and low 80s for the rest of the week. Humidity levels are going to remain on the low/dry side this week.

Thursday is a little concerning, from afar, as a fairly strong storm system crosses Northern New England/southern Canada... which puts us in position for active weather when a warm front crosses the region in the morning and then eventually a cold front later in the day. I'll keep you all updated on the evolution of this upcoming event. Just keep in mind that Thursday could be an active weather day with impacts to outdoor plans. More details forthcoming in subsequent updates.

SUNDAY STORMS: SMALL HAIL POSSIBLE

High resolution models are insistent on thunderstorms forming across Northern Massachusetts in the early afternoon and continuing through early evening.

Temperatures in the mid layers of the atmosphere... way above our heads... are a little colder than usual, so small hail is possible in any thunderstorm.

Not EVERYONE will get a thunderstorm, and even fewer will see hail...but this does figure to be an active time across Eastern Massachusetts this afternoon...so plan any outdoor activities with an indoor fallback plan this afternoon.

Activity should fade with the setting sun this evening

Watching a line of storms and some of them are producing strong winds…again…out by Worcester.

Storms will progress east, but should begin to weaken as they get closer to the coast. Again, not impossible for a cell or two to make it to the coast with a wind gust to 40mph and some lightning. Many of us will see a shower, perhaps briefly heavy.

Best chance of any strong winds and thunder remains southwest of Boston with this approaching cell

It doesn't look like we see much activity on the North Shore until later tonight, when a dying line of showers and storms comes through...as modeled here around 10pm.

We may still see some gusty winds to 40mph and a flash of lightning with some moderate rain...so plan accordingly.

Tomorrow another batch of showers rotates down the coast from Maine to the North Shore in the afternoon so be prepared for that.

SUNDAY SHOWERS/STORMS: MID-LATE AFTERNOON ARRIVAL EXPECTED

Yeah, we're not done with the weekend rain just yet. Another disturbance will drop south just like yesterdays system, albeit this one is much weaker.

The result will be fairly widespread showers, with a couple of thunderstorms possible. The expected arrival time is between 3-5PM.

Showers will not be continuous...so outdoor activities can survive the day with some patience.

POTENTIAL METEOR AT 2:11PM: VERY BRIEF BRIGHT YELLOW/GREEN FLASH IN MASSACHUSETTS BAY/CAPE COD BAY AT 18:11GTM (2:11PM OUR TIME)

The large boom that you heard was likely a meteor coming into Earth's atmosphere right over our heads! If you watch this loop, you'll see a bright flash detected by the Goes-19 Geostationary Lightning Mapping technology.

This bright flash is not associated with any thunderstorm activity...and is too brief/large to be associated with a thunderstorm.

I understand the concern...but this pretty unequivocally answers our question as to what that loud noise was....the sonic boom associated with this meteor entering the atmosphere above our heads!

CRAZY!

PS, unconfirmed reports of people from NYC actually seeing it....but don't hold me to that just yet!

05/30/2026

Fairly large outage affecting Lynn, Swampscott and Marblehead...estimated to be affecting close to 10,000 customers...and restoration time estimated to be 1pm. Crews are busy so don't be pi**ed off if it takes longer.

Winds have gusted to 50-55mph this morning...and while that may not seem extraordinarily high....the fully leafed trees act like a sail and catch that wind. Consequently, we have more tree damage with these wind speeds in Spring/Summer when compared to similar events during the winter.

05/30/2026

Lots of reports of downed tree branches across the North Shore and Merrimack Valley. Rough morning out there!

BACK TO MARCH FOR SATURDAY: RAIN, WINDY, COLD

Yes...that IS a storm system dropping south from Montreal on Saturday, May 30th....and NOT March 30th.

No two ways to put it...this is a CRAPPY pattern for late May and we're going to pay the price for it tomorrow.

A storm system drops south and intensifies as it does so...leading to a period of heavy rain from the seacoast of NH down to Boston...with intensifying northeast winds that will gust to 50mph along the North Shore coast...

Now with trees full of leaves...50mph gusts will do some branch damage. So heads up on that...power outages not impossible as a result.

The worst of the conditions will be late tonight through tomorrow morning, with winds peaking tomorrow morning as the storm continues to strengthen as it dives to the southeast.

Around 1 inch of rain expected and temperatures around 50F, give or take a couple degrees.

MEMORIAL DAY 930AM UPDATE: Steady rain arriving shortly…should last about 2 hours…then clearing and heading towards 70 later this afternoon!
