**Training isn't about creating the perfect companion. It's about understanding the one you have.**
One of the most common myths we hear is:
*"Senior dogs don't benefit from training."*
Actually, the opposite is often true.
As companions age, training becomes less about obedience and more about communication—helping us understand how they learn, what brings them confidence, and what they need to thrive.
At Living Grace Canine Ranch, some of the most valuable "training" happens during ordinary moments:
• Making eye contact when their name is called
• Following a hand signal when hearing begins to fade
• A gentle nose-to-hand touch (followed by a Cheerio—a Ranch favorite)
• Learning new routines that build confidence and engagement
For senior companions, the goal isn't perfection.
It's connection.
In fact, some traditional obedience exercises may no longer be appropriate for companions living with arthritis or mobility challenges. Good training adapts to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to the training.
Growing older doesn't mean learning stops.
It simply means the lessons become different.
And sometimes the most important thing we learn is who our companion has been all along. 💛

One year ago, Teddy arrived at Living Grace Canine Ranch with no known history and no one searching for him.
Found as a rural stray, Teddy came to LGCR on May 24, 2025, at approximately 10 years old. He was severely underweight with a Body Condition Score of 3 out of 10—a veterinary measure indicating significant muscle loss and inadequate body fat reserves.
His medical evaluation revealed heartworm disease, severe intestinal parasite infestation, antibiotic-resistant parasites, fractured teeth, and that he was not neutered.
The road back to health would not be quick.
Over the past year, Teddy has undergone heartworm treatment, dental care, nutritional rehabilitation, parasite management, and countless veterinary visits. Most importantly, he gained something every dog deserves: consistency, safety, and people committed to his future.
Today, Teddy spent the morning wagging his tail, greeting volunteers, and blowing kisses to staff as he began a new chapter as a Forever Foster resident.
At LGCR, Forever Foster means a dog leaves the sanctuary to live in a loving home while LGCR continues to provide lifelong medical care, support, and commitment. His address may be changing, but our promise never does.
Happy Forever Foster Day, Teddy.
A year of healing. A lifetime of love. And a new chapter is waiting to be written. 🐾
Some senior dogs arrive carrying more than fear.
They arrive carrying years of survival.
When Mr. Wilson first came to us, he carried a lifetime of reasons to be cautious.
Human touch was something to avoid.
Trust was something to question.
People were not yet a source of comfort.
But healing rarely belongs to one person.
It belongs to every volunteer who showed up.
Every staff member who refused to give up.
Every quiet moment of patience.
Every small step forward.
Every chance to try again.
And slowly, Mr. Wilson began choosing something different.
Connection.
Today, the resident who once stood apart now seeks out companionship, comfort, and belonging.
This isn't a story about being saved.
It's a story about what becomes possible when a community makes room for healing.
Mr. Wilson's journey reminds us why we do this work.
Because every resident deserves a place to belong.

Kash • Age 15
Six years ago, Kash arrived at Living Grace Canine Ranch.
Six years ago, Deidre opened her heart and home.
What followed wasn't a temporary foster placement. It became his extended family.
For six years, Kash has enjoyed the comfort of familiar routines, the security of a loving Forever Foster home, and the assurance that he would never have to face life's challenges alone.
Through veterinary visits, quiet afternoons, changing seasons, and all the moments in between, Deidre has remained by his side.
This is what Forever Foster looks like.
Not a place.
A promise.
Along with Kash and 168 fellow Sanctuary Sweethearts, we celebrate a truth we witness every day at Living Grace Canine Ranch: age is never the end of the story. When love remains, new chapters of hope, health, happiness, and belonging are still waiting to be written.
Six years loved. Six years cherished. And still writing new chapters together. 🐾

Happy 14th Birthday, Jack. ❤️
This month, Jack celebrates his 14th birthday and the beginning of his fifth year as a Living Grace resident.
When Jack arrived, the road ahead was uncertain.
Jack watched the world carefully. Trust was not freely given, and unfamiliar situations often required patience and understanding.
For Jack, healing was never about becoming a different dog. It was about discovering that he was safe enough to be himself.
Over the years, he formed friendships, built confidence, and gradually expanded the circle of people he trusted. One of those relationships began with a Ranch Pal who quietly earned his confidence. Today, she and her husband share their home with Jack and his LGCR brother, Henry.
Perhaps that is what makes Jack's story so meaningful.
Not that everything changed overnight.
🐾But that trust was given the time it needed.
Happy Birthday, Jack.
Thank you for reminding us that some of life's most meaningful journeys cannot be rushed.

**New World Screwworm: What Texas Pet Owners Should Know**
You may have seen recent headlines regarding New World Screwworm (NWS) cases identified in Texas.
Pictured is **Gidget, age 13**, one of the many senior residents who remind us why staying informed matters. Awareness helps us protect the dogs entrusted to our care.
As with many emerging animal health stories, social media can quickly blur the line between fact and fear. Here are a few important facts:
• **New World Screwworm is not a contagious disease.** It is not spread from dog to dog like kennel cough, canine influenza, or parvovirus.
• **NWS is a parasitic condition.** It occurs when flies lay eggs in an open wound or area of damaged tissue.
• **It is preventable.** Regularly inspecting your pet for wounds, skin irritations, ear problems, and other concerns is one of the best preventive measures.
• **It is treatable.** Early detection and prompt veterinary care are critical. When identified quickly, affected animals can be successfully treated.
At Living Grace Canine Ranch, we are monitoring updates from animal health authorities and remain committed to sharing reliable information that helps keep pets safe.
If you notice a wound that appears to be worsening, has an unusual odor, or is not healing properly, contact your veterinarian promptly.
As always, your veterinarian remains the best source of guidance regarding your individual pet.

Theo's Week 3 report card is in, and the progress continues. 🐾
This week brought some important milestones.
Theo is making good progress walking out of the kennel while other dogs are barking around him, and he's becoming more comfortable staying settled and focused when asked.
Perhaps most encouraging, his trainers are beginning to prepare for carefully managed reintroductions with other dogs. As part of that process, Theo will begin muzzle training—a common professional training tool that allows dogs to safely practice new social skills while reducing risk for everyone involved. It's not about expecting failure. It's about creating a structured environment where learning can happen successfully.
Three weeks ago, Theo approached many situations with enthusiasm first and self-control second.
Today, we're seeing something different.
🤓The report tells us Theo is becoming less of a constitutional lawyer and more of a student who has reluctantly admitted the teacher may have a point. That's growth. Humans usually need three marriages and a leadership seminar to get there. Theo appears to be doing it in three weeks.
Whether his future includes living in community at the ranch or one day with a carefully matched Forever Foster family, each new skill creates a little more opportunity—and a little more possibility for what comes next. 💛

**Old Souls. New Chapters.**
For many senior dogs, the world begins to lower its expectations.
The walks become shorter.
The invitations become fewer.
The assumptions become louder.
Too old.
Too fragile.
Too late.
At Living Grace Canine Ranch, we believe something different.
We believe age is not the end of the story.
Every day, we meet companions who continue to teach us about resilience, trust, joy, courage, and the quiet strength that comes from a life well lived.
Some arrive weighing 12 pounds.
Some arrive weighing 168 pounds.
Some have cloudy eyes, slower steps, or medical challenges that accompany advanced age.
Yet each one reminds us of the same truth:
Aging does not diminish the value of a life.
It simply reveals a different kind of beauty.
This month, as we welcome June, we celebrate the old souls who continue to inspire us—and the new chapters still waiting to be written.
Because every journey deserves dignity.
Every life deserves belonging.
And every chapter deserves to be lived.
