On May 7th, the Bernalillo Police Department welcomed two classes from Bernalillo Elementary School during their field trip to Town Hall.

Ofc. C. Couch and Det. P. Castorena did a great job interacting with the students, answering questions, and giving them a positive look into law enforcement and community service. We always appreciate opportunities to connect with the youth in our community! 🚓📚

Bernalillo PD is proud to share that today’s DEA Drug Take Back event was a success.

With the support of our community, we safely collected 64.41 pounds of unused and expired prescription medications.

Proper disposal of medications plays an important role in preventing misuse, protecting our environment, and keeping our community safe. Every pill turned in truly makes a difference.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped spread the word—we appreciate your partnership in keeping Bernalillo safe. 💊

On April 14, 2026, at approximately 0449 hours, officers received a 911 call near the 550/North Hill Road area. The reporting party stated someone was actively shooting at their vehicle, which was struck by gunfire. The complainant described the alleged shooter.

Officers arrived on scene and began searching for the suspect, and made contact with someone matching the description at the 550 Rail Runner station. A foot pursuit ensued north of the location. Officers lost visual of the subject and set a perimeter. During the search for the subject, officers located him, at which point a firearm was pointed at officers. Officers engaged the suspect with gunfire. As the suspect fled the area, shots were exchanged between the officers and the suspect. No officers were struck by gunfire.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, Rio Rancho Police Department, New Mexico State Police, and federal agencies.

At approximately 0709 hours, a male subject was taken into custody within the incident perimeter. The scene is active; however, we don’t believe there is an active threat to civilians. Officers will be working the scene until further notice.
