Research shows that when people are anxious before a meeting, writing down potential discussion points the meetings tend to go a lot better.
They're a lot less anxious. They might never even look at or revisit the topics that they jotted down on that piece of paper, but that gives them a feeling of security that they have those back pocket questions.

I often hear from clients, “I’m paying them to do this job. Why do I need to be nice to them?
Why do I need to figure out what motivates them?”
Here’s the reality: Most people, probably including yourself, could earn more elsewhere or doing something different.
So why choose the work and place you did?
It could be a lifestyle fit, a culture fit, or alignment with the organization’s mission and values. While money is important, it’s not the only reason we work.

Many of my clients are also undertaking big new roles these days.
Taking on a bigger role, whether inside your current organization or by moving into a new one, comes with built-in contradictions that my clients can struggle to negotiate.
The expertise that landed you your new role is often no longer enough now that your span of control and remit widens.
On top of that, the feeling that you deserved the promotion and opportunity is often replaced with feeling like an imposter who’s in over their head with all the new challenges.

Do you overcomplicate things?
Often people want to wrap their hands around a whole project before even starting, and it’s something I notice I fall into myself.
The challenge with this tendency is that it often overcomplicates things before any action is taken – leading to potentially wasted hours.
If you want to avoid the same trap, here’s my advice ⬇ ⬇

Uncertainty and change are key aspects that leaders often overlook when planning team-building events or an off-site but it is important to address these issues as they can be particularly challenging for teams.
All too often, team building events can get focused on what’s ahead or what is expected from people and how you want them to be collaborative and embrace the new strategic priorities.
However, is important to make sure that there is time set aside to talk about change and uncertainty.

If bad behavior is rewarded in some way, it continues. This is what my trainer told me when working with my puppy.
The same goes for your team: if you’re not giving consistent feedback, they might not change.
Yet the most common response from my coaching clients is that they are too stressed or don't have the time to give feedback.
So the frustrating behaviors of their direct reports continue without changing because they are getting some kind of reward for working in a particular way.
Next time you're frustrated, consider what behaviors you're unintentionally rewarding.

We’re at the mid-point of the year. If you’re like 91% of Americans, you haven’t thought about your New Year’s Resolutions in months – unless it’s to lament how quickly you gave them up.
If you’re like many clients reaching out to me, you are aware that stating your goal, and even making your initial plan, hasn’t closed the gap between you and your dream as quickly as you had hoped, and expected. You’re in the messy middle when it’s tempting to give up, when your lack of success feels like a personal flaw, and when you may question whether that goal is even possible for you.

Are you struggling with procrastination these days?
Here are a couple of good hacks that can help.
How to fight procrastination when you’re self-employed In the past year, I’ve made progress on addressing the root cause of my distraction. Here’s what works for me in fighting procrastination.
"I'm not part of the sandwich generation, I'm the panini press. I am being squeezed so much on both sides.”
This is what a colleague shared with me the other day and I love this analogy as it truly describes that feeling of being squeezed from both sides as people struggle to take care of elders while still having kids that need their needs met.
With the holiday weekend right ahead of us this week, I wanted to remind team leaders and employers that there’s a good chance you have some panini-pressed members on your team who are juggling elder care, work, and family, even on vacation.
As a leader, be mindful that time off might not always mean rest for your team. Understand their pressures and create space for them to navigate these challenges.
Have a lovely vacation week if you can take any time off this week and if you have other things planned this weekend, I hope you can still find ways to enjoy what you’re doing.
What often leads to a job feeling useful or meaningless is the workplace environment. That's where team leaders and managers have the opportunity to turn things around.

Have you ever thought you had the perfect solution only to realize it wasn’t as easy as you initially thought?
I often see my clients jump straight to implementing new solutions, especially during reorgs or when moving people around. They focus on the desired outcome and the immediate fix, which is great first-order thinking. However, they often neglect second-order thinking—considering what else their solution might disrupt.

Have you ever found yourself sidetracked by irrelevant details when making a decision?
When making decisions, it’s important to focus on what matters.
🎧 When my headphones were stolen on a recent trip, I was forced to research and buy a new pair.
However, as I was weighing my options, I found myself distracted by factors that were completely irrelevant, factors that had never been on my initial list of criteria.
This process made me realize that it’s crucial to stick to your core criteria and avoid getting sidetracked by non-essential factors, whether it's selecting new gear or hiring the right candidate.
Turning up the dial and actively participating in meetings makes the experience more fulfilling for you AND enriches the overall session for everyone involved.

People don’t change. They are who they are.
Over the years, I have heard these words so many times from my clients and it immediately sends me into disproving mode — I am a coach, right?
I spend my days finding evidence contrary to that statement.
People DO change.
People change their habits. People change their beliefs about what’s possible, both for themselves and for others. People change their lives – they leave jobs, careers, hometowns – the list is endless.
And yet there is a kernel of truth in that statement: “People don’t change.”

I am sure you are familiar with the 4 D’s of Time Management:
Do, Delay, Delegate, or Delete
Well, here’s a fifth one: Diminish.
A colleague shared this with me recently, and in my opinion, it's brilliant because it lets people start small.
We all come up with these amazing ideas in our heads. But we can also see the whole picture and what building it out would take. That's when we become totally overwhelmed.
Diminish helps us ask ourselves what it would look like to do a small part of the project.
This can help with your own to-do list but it can also help negotiate effectively when your boss is trying to delegate work to you.
Instead of saying no, you can offer them a diminished version of the project they want to pass off to you.

Many of my clients are undertaking big new roles these days.
And they want to hit the ground running without being intimidated.
Drawing on their experience and my own, I've come up with four tools for navigating new, and desired, challenges.
1. Give up being the knower.
2. Befriend others who know.
3. Build in plenty of integration time.
4. Inhabit the frustration of being new.

These days, with so many meetings taking place in the virtual space, small talk has all but disappeared.
