Sulu Sea. Preparing to swim the channel no person had mastered. The last white person to even visit our island was an Italian priest in 1956, who dared stay only half a day. As their Datu, or prince, I shook 100 percent of the clan's hands, hugged the babies, shared swimming goggles with youth, then swam coast to coast with ease. Monte and I did 3.5 miles last year, he faster. We are beginning a new project there, beyond the horizon, beyond the utmost bounds of human thought. Ask me. Tom.

A 35 year old woman came in because her husband--now in prison for life-- murdered their 3 year old son. "What can I do?" I wondered. Empathy, antidepressants, a psychiatrist for long-term therapy, arranging for her to see me again for support. The details were almost too much to bear simply listening, much less to live through them.
