Down in the dark depths of the ocean and far away from air, plankton, sunlight, and photosynthetic organisms; oxygen is being produced--dark oxygen. This came as a surprise to a team of scientists and researchers surveying the ocean floor and its ecosystem. Up until now, it was believed that oxygen was naturally produced solely through photosynthesis via plants, plankton, and some bacteria that convert sunlight into energy and release oxygen as a byproduct. It appears that polymetallic nodules, rock-like formations composed of various metals, may be the source of this oxygen (image pictured above).
These nodules are highly sought after by deep sea mining companies for use in electronics as they are composed of metals such as manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and copper–metals needed to make batteries. These nodules, like batteries, release a low level electric output that may be strong enough to separate the chemical components of water through electrolysis.
This discovery gives us further insight into how deep sea ecosystems function and survive, and raises more questions about the importance of protecting and understanding those same ecosystems.

Who’s that tiny mammal living amongst the Pickleweed in the marshes of San Francisco Bay?
It’s the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse! This charming Bay Area native is uniquely adapted to living in the brackish world of marshes and estuaries. It is an excellent swimmer and climber, and one of the few land mammals able to drink sea water. Its diet consists mainly of pickleweed, an edible, salt filled succulent that thrives in high tide areas. This special Bay Area mouse is listed as endangered due to shrinking habitats and pollution, especially from sewage dumped in the bay. Thank you to all of our boaters who keep our bay clean through proper waste disposal! The Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse and its habitat are safer due to your actions!
Thanks to the US Fish and Wildlife Service for this wonderful picture.
