At the culmination of the final verse the anger and frustration at the main revelation is relaxed into resignation and even gratitude that the object of the character’s love will not be forced into the same negative afterlife situation. It is a quick turnaround for the character who is left alone (thus the swelling reverb of the final vocal).

The guitar solo is the moment of revelation. Compared to the vocals (which inhabit the same space in the musical context) it is much clearer. There is doubling going on still, with two different guitars panned widely opposite, but they are much more closely aligned in time.
Both guitars are without effects, plugged directly into the amplifiers using only the natural-harmonic distortion/overdrive of pushing an amp. There’s no more wobbling, there’s less and less uncertainty in the mind of our character who is coming to grips with the reality of his new situation.
But there is rising anger/frustration. This culminates as the solo ends and leads into the final verse, where the lead vocal returns, but this time singularly in the center of the mix and with some distressing to continue that distortion begun on guitar.
Tomorrow we’ll talk about the final lines.

So the vocal production was very much a product of the song writing. In the first period of the song, our main character is unsure of where he is, lost possibly, his head is swimming as he slowly figures out why he is on his quest and where he is.
That is why the opening verses feature a doubled lead vocal with effects panned to either side and in quite poor time with each other. I wanted to give the impression that our character isn’t in control of the song but is just trying to hang on. Then as the realization hits in the lead-up to the guitar solo, things get quiet and we switch to a single centered vocal, quietly recognizing what is happening.
The actual moment of realization is purely emotional without linguistic processing and is the guitar solo, but we’ll get into that tomorrow.

The first thing I wanted to talk about was the songwriting process for this one. I usually really agonize over songs and it takes me weeks or months, my previous release Hold On To took five years to finish.
But Six Feet Under wasn’t really like that. I had the chords and the opening line “I don’t understand, I don’t think I want to” for a while but one evening I was given the inspiration for the follow up. Once I had that, the rest came in a flood within 10 minutes.
It was a story which very much came without thinking of any background or inspiration, but when the time came to shoot the music video, I told the director to think of it as the inner dialogue of Romeo after he had died, searching for Juliet, who, in this version, had faked her death but didn’t reciprocate the su***de after waking up. He made the wrong choice, and is trying to find consolation that at least she didn’t end up dead as well.
The writing also played into the vocal production choices (with which some have really taken issue), but that’ll be for tomorrow.
