That moment when someone says something hard to you and your whole face does a thing.
You get quiet. You over-explain. You seem fine and then you’re a little weird for the next week.
Your team is watching that moment, friend. And they are taking notes.
The note says: feedback is not safe here.
Here’s what to do instead:
Take a breath before you respond. Even two seconds. It signals you received it.
Say “thank you for telling me that” before anything else. Not admitting fault — just modeling that honesty is welcome.
Follow up within 48 hours. Even just “I’ve been thinking about what you said.” That follow-up is everything.
A feedback culture doesn’t start with how you give it. It starts with how you receive it.
